A friend has an interesting question; posting on her behalf:

What happens to Paro after Devdas dies? Her love for Devdas has been revealed to her in-laws and she is shut behind their house gate.

(Some considerations - one, she is a mere housekeeper in that house and has great functional value and no emotional value. Second, will she have any will left to function anymore and be strong enough to defend herself? third, will the respectable in-laws accept her despite her great functional values or will the social respecatbility become more important?)

The book leads up to Paro having a breakdown and seeing a vision of Devdas after he dies. So I voted for a breakdown.

I don't know how to vote as I tend to favour option 2 provided Paro is shown to be strong ?? I can't really make out what the option 2 really is ??

I'd say as Paro is a strong character, she would not scumb to social pressures and will lead an independent life, taking revenge getting cues from Madhuri Dixit character.

Paro shouldn't be depending on In-laws acceptance or rejection. If anything, it should be other way around.

Sorry for the confusion -- Option 2 is: After Devdas dies, Paro loses her balance and/or will to survive and/or is locked up forever in the house by the watchful family... until she dies. Option 1 is that she recovers, at least outwardly, and continues as is, either devoid of all emotion or even if still being emotional, but being strong and/or practical, goes back to normal life in the household.

My choice of this fourth option is based on the strong willed and strong character who doesn't get intimidated by anyone that's shown in the SLB's (SRK, Aish, Madhri) version.
