Both Robert Bresson and Luchino Visconti have made White Nights before and I wouldn't be surprised to learn if SLB copied some scenes from their versions, just like he did with the fountain scene in Black, which copied the miracle worker. Shameless!

I don't think the Bresson film is easily available on video, but Criterion released Visconti's version (Le Notti Bianche). I'll watch that before I see Saawariya.

La Notte Bianche is a great film - and probably way better than Saawariya. First viewing of La Notte Bianche I didn't know what to expect - it has a slow pace and the story is mainly focussed on waiting and longing. However, once I had got the simplicity of the story I really appreciated the atmosphere of the movie. I would recommend watching this - I'm a bit of a Visconti fan though - so I try hard to like anything that he made!

*LOL* I wonder if people would be saying the same if the female lead had done that scene and I wonder if the Indian censors would have even allowed it. Probably not. As it is that shot seems to have overshadowed much of the film.

But what I'm more surprised about is that every single film of Bhansali has been a copy of another. He's made a career out of copying other people's work.

I enjoyed SAAWARIYA. While it's no BLACK, it certainly was beautiful to look at and the musical numbers were top notch. The new leads didn't embarass themselves either. I thought that Salman's short role was kind of a drag but Rani delivered once again. Fun stuff.
