Lots of Films next 2-3 weeks in Ottawa:

Mistress Of Spices (AMC and World Exchange)

Omkara (Rainbow)

KANK (Silver City from Aug 11)
---------------------------------------------------
Free Screenings at Canadian Film Institute (National Archieves):
There is some confusion as 2 lists two different sets of films.

Canadian Film Institute lists the following:
Aug 11 Paheli
Aug 12 Phir Milenge
Aug 13 Viruddh
Aug 19 Chokkher Bali
Aug 20 Chameli
Aug 27 Baghbaan

But, Canadian H C, that's providing the films, list some different ones:
Paheli
Phir Milenge
Viruddh
First Monsoon
Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara
Chameli
Baghbaan

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna in Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa:

In Ottawa it already was announced for Silver City starting this Friday.
Indications are, it sure is releasing in main stream theatres in Toronto and Montreal as well, along with Albion-Woodside.

Just noticed this listing appearing on Cinemaclock.com (just 5 min ago it wasn't). It's titled "Never Say Goodbye" indicating targetting main stream theatres and audiences.

Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal showtimes for KANK as per Cinemaclock:

(Of these only Silver City in Gloucester/ Ottawa has Dolby Digital sound. All other theatres are not equipped with full DD . Don't know whether multichannel sound is of much importance to this type of film though. And whether even at Silver City they will get a proper match between film audio track and theatre playback)

I don't know any further details as to if what other film crew will attend or where the premiere will be held and when ?? Film releases Jan 12.

Can someone pl confirm and provide further details ??
Also, what's the possibility of buying tickets and what's the attendance like in such Toronto premieres ??

Apart from Hindi/ Punjabi population, Toronto has a huge Tamil population too. Tamil films are regularly shown in theatres.

So, must be a good idea to attract a big crowd. Plus, a 800 seat full theatre in Canada will bring in 10 times more money than a 800 seater in India.

If an Indian film clicks in the Overseas market, it'll be profitable even if dull in India. It's good that they are paying attention to publicity in the Overseas market, realizing overseas potential.
---------------

BTW, Guru Premiere in Toronto is at 6:00 PM on the 11th of January.

Star studded World Premiere of Mani Ratnam's much anticipated Guru will premiere in Toronto, Canada on January 11th 2007 at the prestigious Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre, where most of Hollywood films are premiered. "It will be like a regular Hollywood Red Carpet Premiere. No Indian film has been screened here yet and take it from me it is very expensive", said Padamm Kumar, COO- India of Roger Nair Productions. Roger Nair Productions has acquired the Canadian rights of writer/director Mani Ratnam's Guru from Kaleidoscope Entertainment.

This has been path breaking and a landmark deal between Canada and India, in the process making Canada an official territory for Bollywood films. "Traditionally the North American territory included USA, Canada and the Carribean. We are trying to make Canada a separate terrority by itself", said Kumar.

Most of the cast will be attending the premiere including Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, R Madhavan, AR Rahman and Mani Ratnam.

Tickets are going for $100 a piece. Depending on where you live in TO.
In the Markham/Scarborough area, you can pick them up at Music Asia Inc. on Steeles Ave. East OR if your in the Mississauga area, you can get them at Video Palace.

Any Zulmi in Guru's premier?

Bollywood on the red carpet

Prithi Yelaja
Staff Reporter

When Bollywood's hottest couple, Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, stepped out of their limo on Yonge St. and onto the red carpet in front of the Elgin Theatre last night, the fans sent up a roar so loud it could almost have been heard in India.

In fact, it probably was – given the crush of TV media who flew in from India to record the event, the first world premiere of a Bollywood film in Toronto.

"We love you!" screamed the crowd, estimated by police at about 1,000 – many of whom had staked out spots for hours across from the theatre.

The 6-foot-tall Bachchan, dressed in a black Nehru jacket, declared the premiere of Guru "a very proud moment for the Indian film industry."

Rai, in a champagne-coloured silk pajama kurta, appeared overwhelmed. "I can't thank them enough for their love, good wishes and support," she said of the fans.

Others on the red carpet included the film's director, Mani Ratnam, composer A. R. Rahman and Mayor David Miller.

"Why Toronto?" Miller responded to questions from reporters.

"We've got a huge South Asian population, we're an international city, so where else would you have a Bollywood premiere outside of India?"

Asked to name his favourite Bollywood flick, Miller replied, "I'll tell you after the film. I don't want to offend any of the stars."

It was clearly Bachchan and Rai the fans were standing in the cold to see.

"They're huge," Indian television correspondent Abhishek Srivastava said. "In India, they have the star power of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

"Anywhere they appear in public, it's news."

Some fans were miffed about the hefty ticket prices – ranging from $100 to $500 – for the premiere, which did not sell out.

"If I got to sit next to Aishwarya, I'd pay $100. Tomorrow it's showing for $10 at the cineplex, so I'll see it then, " said Naj Khan, 25, a Toronto business analyst who staked out a spot across the street, along with a gang of friends to catch a glimpse of Rai.

Other fans didn't mind shelling out $100 for a chance to be a part of Toronto and Bollywood history.

"It's the first time a Bollywood premiere has happened in Toronto, so we wanted to be part of the excitement," said Rosham Punja, 35, a Toronto nurse. "It's so amazing to be able to experience this and showcase the culture and Toronto across the world."

"We love it. We feel like we're in Bombay ... with all of this hungama (hullabaloo)," said Khushwinder Verma, 33, a Toronto systems analyst.

Some joked about the star couple's compatibility. "She's a gorgeous, excellent actor and I think they make a great couple," said Shahid Abdool, 34, a buyer from Maple.

"No, no, I think Abhishek deserves much better," interjected a laughing Mumtaz Musaji, 30, another nurse. "She (Rai) is pretty but she's overrrated."

The big-budget Guru is inspired by the rags-to-riches story of Dhirubhai Ambani, one of India's leading industrialists.
