Maybe this question is obvious but I need to know who invented the term "bollywood" ?
I heard it was a journalist. But who ? Was he (or she) Indian ? And since when does this term exists ?

Found the below while searching newsgroups:

Quote:
the facts as tey are

1.)Tollygunj, a locality in Kolkata is where all the big-wigs of the Bangla
film industry stay and work
2.) Naturally Tollygunj became a short hand for Bangla films.
3.) A clever Bangla journalist noticed the similiarity between Tollygunj
and Hollywood and coined the new term Tollywood to refer to Bangla films
4.) This became widely popular in the press of WB
5.) Naturally, the most pressing and burning question among the Bhadralok of
Bongland became - "We have a good name for our industry, another name for
the American industry but what do we call the *Hindi* film industry?
6.) The natural answer, of course was Bollywood.
7.) This was eventually picked up the film press/English press BUT without
most of them being aware of how the term came into existence in the 1st
place.

Furthermore, it is NOT a derogatory or insulting term as many
including my man Amitabh choose to believe. It is, instead a term
of pride. When the Bongs came up with Tollywood and latter Bollywood,
implicit in the terms was the implication that the movies from these
industries were very much comparable with the very best (Hollywood)
that the world had to offer.

Hope that helps :)

I thought the use of the term Bollywood was to compare Bombay with Hollywood. As Bombay has been changed to Mumbai, surely Bollywood should be changed to MOLLYWOOD...?

:)

How the term Bollywood got started has been discussed before, but can't find the thread through Search button.

As I mentioned in that thread, As far as I know and read in a few old (80s/ 90s) film magazines, the first time term Bollywood was used was in the late 70s or early 80s by a Film Journalist for New York based News Magazine perhaps Star Dust. They started using this word and later it became common among every one.

Bollywood for Bombay based Hollywood.
Yes, as Bombay has changed to Mumbai now, if the same journalist was to name it again, he sure would name it Mollywood.

I am sure this term was occassionaly being used by bitchy journalists in STARDUST magazines of the late 1970s/early 1980s...

You are right Armaan. My mistake. Yes, it was Star Dust (this is what I meant to say) not India Abroad. It was one of their journalists who used 'Bollywood' and then it caught on.

(Corrected my post above)

Talking of Stardust, this must have been one of the first international magazine on Indian films. I have all the issues from 1980 to 1990. Bachchan must have had some sort of fight with the publishers, as he was always mentioned as the angry middle-aged man...
:)
I wonder if anyone have issues prior to 1980, as that would have been the peak time of some of my favourite oldies?

Tiff between Stardust and AB is well klnown. Stardust had boycotted AB for many many yrs (more than 10 yrs). Don't remember if it was limited to printing his picture or even his news. At the time of AB's critical injury, Stardust comment was that they didn't wish this to AB even though they were at odds with him.

They patched up not too long ago.
