Yesterday they showed DDLJ on OMNI TV. We all know, its DVD is Progressive and is Film to NTSC telecine. Still the broadcast was PAL to NTSC converted.

Who is to be blamed??

It is we, ourselves in North America.

Almost all Pay TV broadcast and regular TV broadcasts of Indian Films are ‘PAL to NTSC’ converted even if a ‘Film to NTSC’ master exists. We support these substandard broadcasts by subscribing to these Pay TV channels. PAL to NTSC conversion is fine if the original program is/ was in PAL (Indian news, dramas etc), but if the original material is film, why should it be converted from film to PAL and then from PAL to NTSC?? Obviously TV broadcast rights are traded and films are mastered for the local Indian market and that is in PAL. It’s much easier for the studios to convert from PAL to NTSC than to get a new telecine. Who cares for quality. As long as we keep on accepting and keep on paying for these kinds of programs, we won’t get Film to NTSC broadcasts.

These inferior quality videos migrate further in the form of NTSC DVDs. When they have cheaper PAL masters available and DVD makers know that they will be accepted, they keep on churning out ‘Film to PAL to NTSC’ DVDs.

As most TV masters for film broadcasts are in PAL, their broadcast quality comes out excellent in PAL countries, as reported in many zulm posts, and crap in NTSC countries.
