I asked a relative visiting India to bring me back a copy of "The Spirit of Lagaan." I got it yesterday and so far it is a terrific book. It is written by Satyajit Bhatkal, a childhood friend of Aamir Khan, who was there from the beginning, from the narration of the story to the production of the film itself. Aamir Khan first thought the idea was stupid, but he made a 180 turn, of course, becoming the producer of the film. The book is 243 pages long and has plenty of photographs, including a few of Ashutosh Gowariker with a full head of hair, even while location scouting. He must have lost it directing the film! The cost is Rs. 250 and is from Popular Prakashan Pvt. Ltd.

The first page mentions that Bhatkal directed a documentary on the film, which is "currently under postproduction." I hope it gets released on DVD.

The book is fantastic - I picked it up last year in India, and it was well worth the money. Rather than the glossy overpriced stuff released for Asoka and K3G, this book focusses on the making of the movie.
