Filmi fundas for good health

Dr P.V. Vaidyanathan M.D.;DCH (Paediatrics)

Cinema has always been criticised for being the root cause of many maladies that affect modern day society. Whether it is the violence in movies that traumatises us, or whether it is the glorifying of bad habits like smoking or drinking, films have drawn a lot of flak, both from the media and the scientific community. Many of today’s films are full of mindless violence, vulgarity and sex. Illicit relationships are the order of the day, more so on the small screen. Almost every soap on TV has one of the lead characters indulging in adultery. Vamps and sirens rule the roost, clothes worn by those scarlet women reveal more than they cover. Even music videos are not immune to this phenomenon and are happily cashing in on the lust of the common man.
In this scenario, unfortunately, what gets buried, is the fact, that cinema has an equal number of therapeautic benefits to the individual as well as to society, as a whole. Surprised? Don’t be. Lately, the therapeautic use of films has been looked at more closely. Several books have been published, and seminars are currently offered on this subject.

Very often, people come out of a movie hall identifying themselves or their problems with someone or something in the film. Many come out of a patriotic movie, ready to lay down their lives for the country, that very moment. Many come out to promise to emulate the good deeds of the hero or the heroine. Many are inspired by certain characters of situations in the film. Many upseeing themselves, and those around them more objectively. Lets take a look at these health benefits.

ow can watching movies be good for you?

Cinema is a double-edged sword. Just as violence and vulgarity can have a harmful effect on the psyche, watching movies with a message or with values that can be emulated are good for human beings. Cinema is like a tool that can be used to our advantage. It is only important to choose the appropriate films.

What should you be watching?
For a good cry, try these films: Ek Duje Ke Liye, Masoom, Devdas, Kagaaz Ke Phool, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, Anand, Dard Ka Rishta

Cinema therapy’ is not without precedent. It was Aristotle, many years ago, who theorised that tragic plays have the capacity to purify the spirit, and help us in coping with those aspects of life that cannot be reconciled by rational thought. Stories, fables and fairy-tales have been part of psycho-therapy for a long time. Psycho-analysts have postulated that, because films are dreamlike, and since they hinge more often on fantasy than on fact, they transmit ideas through emotion rather than intellect. This, in many cases, helps in overcoming the repressions we live with......
