The Pakistani Singer has sung in (excellently pronounced) Tamil for Shankar's Boyz -> 4 Galz. The music was composed by A.R. Rahman who convinced Sami that he should sing for a Tamil Movie.

The song "Boom Boom" has hit big time in the single charts in South India, and is expected to outsell the previous Shankar/Rahman classics like Muqabala (Kadalan), Telephone Manipole (Indian), Ajooba (Jeans), Shakalaka Baby (Mudalavan).

Indeed the singer has redeemed himself after the awful rendition he did in Saathiya's Aye Udi Udi Udi! As many agree the Tamil version sung by the then newcomer S.P. Bala Charan was miles better....

Boyz 4 Galz album is expected to be out in the UK by the end of this month...

Actually, I thought Adnan Sami's rendition was better than the Tamil original in AP, probably the only song on the album that I though was better than the Tamil one. Sami did sing it slightly differently, changing the chorus slightly, with favorable results. Enderum has far better in Tamil than O Humdum. I don't know why Rahman added that distorted voice effect in the Hindi version.

As for Boys, I can't wait. I've been waiting for a Shankar-Rahman album for awhile. The results have been always good, esp if you like thoroughly commercial fare from Rahman. I've heard snippets of three songs from Boys so far, and I'm salivating for this one. I really did like Parusuram, but it was obvious that the songs were Rahman circa 1995-96. The songs were supposed to be in a film that was shelved by the producer, but were used in Parasuram.

I thought Adnan Sami was great in Aye Udi Udi too. The effect A.R. Rahman used in Oh Humdum is called a vocoder and I thought it was put to good use - but there are many music fans who find vocoder effects offensive for some reason...

I love the vocoder effect in that song...and I think AR Rahman used it well though I can't say the same for that Manisha Koirala song in Abhay.

Maybe its the mp3 I downloaded from Tamilbeat.com or the actual mix, but Adnan's voice is sometimes buried under the orchestrations, while the female singer's is clear. From what I could hear, his Tamil pronunciation isn't horrible (better than Udit Narayan), but of course not as good as a South Indian singer. He has trouble with the "zh" sound, which is perfectly understandable. IMO, his voice really shines in songs without a lot of orchestrations to drown it out, such as in Tera Chehra and Nain Se Nainon Ko Mila. The music itself is interesting. I hope we have another good ARR-Shankar album here.

Will download the rest of the Boys songs later.

"Boys" audio launched

Sunday, 29 June , 2003, 17:53

By Moviebuzz

The eagerly awaited audio of Shankar directed Boys with music by A.R.Rahman was launched on Saturday at the Devi theatre in Chennai. Shankar and producer A.M. Ratnam showed two songs and played two other songs from the album for a select audience.

But there was someone missing in the party, as the music director A.R.Rahman who was in Chennai did not turn up for the function, as "he was busy composing a song at home"! However the rest of the team including technicians and artists were present for the event. Shankar's friends and associates congratulated him.

The music is marketed by a little known Chennai based 'Star Audio'. However the company hopes that the Shankar- Rahman combination will surely strike gold, as the songs were peppy and foot tapping. Shankar said that 5.1 digital technology has been employed to record the songs and have been picturised in a grand manner.

Vikram launched the audio by giving Sneha the first copy. Thanks to the clout of producer A.M.Ratnam, top stars like Vikram, Vivek, Sneha, Meena, Trisha, Srikanth, Silambarasan, Sibi Raj and a host of directors like Bharathiraaja, Vikraman, Dharani, Hari, Lingusamy, singers like Vasundhara Das, Sujatha and above all Abhishek Bachchan were present for the function.

In Boys Shankar has introduced five new faces with Vivek playing a important role. Dialogues are by Sujatha and camera is by Ravi.K.Chandran. The film is likely to be released next month.

(What's Shankar talking about???)
