'I didn't want to be alone after seeing Bhoot'

Sukanya Verma | June 20, 2003 18:50 IST

Fear is an overpowering emotion. It not only makes you uneasy, sometimes it even kills.

Recently, a man was found dead at a cinema hall in New Delhi, after watching Ram Gopal Varma's horror thriller Bhoot.

Bhoot, it would seem, has rattled more than a few people, the director included.

Varma recounts the time he was making the film, "I stay alone. One night, after I came home late from the shooting, I thought to myself, 'I am making Bhoot. Why am I not getting scared?' Anyway, I went to sleep. As I closed my eyes, I had the feeling someone was sitting at the edge of my bed. I didn't want to open my eyes. At the same time I felt silly and wanted to laugh at myself. But the fear was there -- what if someone was there?"

In Varma's Bhoot, the spirit of Manjeet (Barkha Madan) and her son casually roam around the spooked house. But it was their unexpected appearance on the scene that startled all and sundry. Adding to the fear factor were elements like doorbells, elevators, doors, mirrors and a rag doll.

Rediff.com spoke to a few people who saw Bhoot and are still haunted by its memories.

Sameer Arshad says. "I was scared the night I saw the film. Despite Ram Gopal Varma's warning in the promos to skip the night show, I did just that -- I watched the night show. I was not expecting to see Manjeet at [my] home but the fear of open doors at night frightened me. I couldn't stare at the wall or at an empty space in the house at night. It was eerie -- the sound of the curtains, the window, the magazine flipping open in the fan's breeze… all these normal day-to-day sounds were suddenly scary."

Patcy Nair was sleepless in Mumbai after watching Bhoot. The administrative executive admits she had to take sleeping pills to go to bed the night after watching the film. Although she doesn't like horror films, she watched this one to check out Urmila Matondkar's acclaimed performance.

Vijay Singh still shudders at the memory of Bhoot: "Picture this, Urmila fetches some water from the fridge and finds a lady standing behind her. That startled the audience and me. When I came to work after seeing the film, a colleague called out from behind me. I was frightened because Manjeet's opening scene was still fresh in my mind."

Walking down corridors in the dark is quite a task for Kulsum Hararwala since she saw Bhoot. What if Manjeet decides to pay her a visit?

Fifty-three-year-old Amitabh Basu saw the film with his sons and admits it was chilling.

Doctor Meenal Sachdev hesitates to stand in front of a mirror, after having watched Urmila's mirrored encounters in Bhoot. The intimidating sound effects of the film were continuously playing in her head. "My husband was tapping the edges of the bed and I got really alarmed," she says.

Amit Sharma and Amit Bhalla saw the film together recently and cannot forget the shock of seeing the dead child suddenly materialise out of thin air.

For Ishan Shankar, there will be no more horror films: "Sometimes, it feels like the surroundings of my house and inanimate objects have taken a life of their own. I didn't want to be alone in the room after I saw Bhoot."

Lynette Menezes, Nikita Jogani, Ashok Motwani didn't experience bouts of fear but admit a few scenes jolted them, "primarily because of the music. The background music was good. It added to the overall effect," says Menezes.

At the June 15 party held in Mumbai's Hyatt Regency to celebrate the success of Bhoot, several clips from the film were played on screen. The lights were turned off to increase their impact.

Lead actor Ajay Devgan tapped a girl on her shoulder. The girl screamed, only to discover it was Devgan.

Bhoot has thrilled many, traumatised a few and killed one.

There's more to come -- July will have more horror tales like Darna Mana Hai, Hawa (Tabu), Sandhya (Jackie Shroff, Raveena Tandon) and Saaya (John Abraham, Tara Sharma).

======================

Personally I just dont understand what there was to be afraid of in this 'lame' movie. Urmilas acting was really good, Rekha 'looked' beautiful, but thats it :O If Bhoot scared people the above people, english horror flicks would kill the entire country!

I thought Rekha looked like a bhoot herself :) :nervous:

I didn't find Bhoot all that scary either. A lot of fake scares and "suspense" that built up to nothing in particular.

Someone once had a heart attack during the adrenaline needle scene in "Pulp Fiction." Now that was a terrific scene!

[I thought Rekha looked like a bhoot herself ]

Lets deal with this one!!

My video store, owner a Sanjay dutt fan dude!!not into, SERIOUS/GOOD FILMS>>

Saw BHOOT...and he liked it( I was shocked), then he told me, that he TOTALLY UNDERSTOOD it too( I wondered, I never thought, there was any thing to UNDERSTAND in BHOOT)...I said? What?

A....You know? who was REAL BHOOT? It was Rekha!!!( ha ha), she was MASTER MINDING BHOOT.. :bangbang:

See, what kinda hindi film watching audience we have...I dont think, he was alone who walked out of theatre with this idea!!

Then that Guy said..he watched KAUN too(Super shock to me), and I liked it, he said!!

Really..I said..He said yes!!

Par Kuch samajh nahin aaya!! Urmilla ne sab ko end maen maar kyoun diya? aakhir kyoun???( I could understand his dilema)

It was pitty of KAUN..even, LITERATE audience, could not get hat film, even till end..Why, I have to Explain, the story/ending to 99.9% people who saw the film, why not RGV!!? Aakhir kyoun??? :baaa: ???

Now!! Second, one, Bhoot and Horror/Scare...

not for me!! at all, there were startling moments..but I enjoyed them..but I know, sensible, grown up people who were seeing Manjeet ka bhoot, for nights, thereafter!!

Suspence..element in BHOOT, I thought was NOT MUCH, at all..You knew from begining WHO were BHOOTS only thing that got REVEALED was WHY they were there? and what they wanted, and It was not a BIG REVELATION, either..

WHO killed Watch man, even AJAY DEVGAN, understood(ha ha) ..it was not that difficult to understand? I think.

Suspence for me was:

1. why urmila was tied hands only, not legs, and why she did not use power of her legs to attack people etc/// think?

2. Why, 3 ladies, rekha/tanuja/seemsa etc, let URMI, go LOOSE to AVENGE SANJAY? AAkhir kyoun??
She was for sure exposed to danger of being SHOT by INSPECTOR to Protect SANJAY(wimp), but Director decided to keep, Inspector away, to let her be LOOSE!!

That moment came in the end, when finally, he had to bring Inspector in, to GET KICKED his ASS him self and then trying to scare BHOOT with gun, til AJAY INTERVEINED!!
I would think, director should have decided, to get AJAY shot in arm or shoulder? to bring more INTENSITY but he did not!

Now I know WHY? If u RE THINK, BHOOT did not PROMOTE, GORE, BLOOD, GRAPHIC VOILENCE, I did not see any BLOOD! Spilt..even Manjeet's Death and Kids, was just HINTED!

and WATCH MAN death was SCARRY but still BLOOD LESS>>.
so RGV created all this HORROR flick, without showing a drop of blood being spilled? (Commendable)

If u compare to KAUN, ending, was more GRAPHIC, full of GORE and BLOOD, Physical voilence!!and Intense!!

One thing he could have done? posibly, Let manjeet,s Bhoot posess Inspector in the end!and let it finish, a la, AKS style..that would have been STUPID..I liked the ENDING in CELL, with fardeen screaming after SMOOCH!

****So, I will repeat..It all depends on ur Psychic make up, lol..

Oh, ya a guy was removed with heart attack, to ER from century theatre, I think, first 50 minutes, of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN( One of the BEST WAR film, I loved, even, there were NO BHOOTS were there)

LOL, people are DYING but ENJOYING..FIRST SUPER HIT of the YEAR!!

BHOOT

The public seem to be enjoying getting scared. The film has collected handsomely even in the second week. In some places, the collections did fall especially in the B class centres but the business in A class centres is so huge that the film can easily be termed as this year’s first superhit.

<spoiler>

The part where the watchman carries the child, goes to the balcony, then comes back without the child, was IMO, the most disturbing moment of the film. No screams, no thumps, no sound effects.

I know..but NOT GRAPHIC...it was a hint..and audience got it..

I WONT EVER RECOMEND showing this film to a YOUNG CHILD, of izzy's age!!
to avoid, EMOTIONAL/PSYCHIS disturbances..try to find SAFE HARBOR for them and watch alone..It is TOO much, for LITTLE BRAINS to HANDLE..IMHO>>

It will be GROSS DISFAVOUR to pull them along for ur OWN SAKE..

During my viewing, there was only one 5-6 yr old was there, who did not cry? I thought parents could not find some one, or thought, it was OK!

LOL, I think Izzy can handle Bhoot. I saw films that were more graphic when I was younger.

Saw quite a few kids at Kaante and many R-rated American movies also.

I know yaar!! But our parents, prob did not quite understand the concept..they took me to watch DRACULA, and I could not sleep, even thought he was FOLLOWING TANGA!! ha ha!!

Now LOOKING back, I am more choosy for my kids!!

Some times, it is not voilence/graphic but theme is inapropriate for age!!

I never let them see, movies like Company/haasil/Khwahish/AJNABEE(wife swaping concept) etc..It is NOT AGE APROPRIATE, and I do CARE!

5-6 year olds shouldn't be at Bhoot, of course. And kids younger than that shouldn't be at movies at all IMO.

Ok, my humble two cents worth. I agree that Bhoot was indeed nothing too scary - it was the first horror film I saw in the cinema, and was hoping RGV would scare the crap out of me. He didn't, but he made me jump a couple of times. As for the most disturbing scene, I agree with Dragun.....I think that is where RGV showed his talent as a director - the scene was pretty disgusting, and you instantly hated the watchman, but it was all implied.

As for the things Arsh bhai's suspense......

The whole Urmila being tied up thing didn't make much sense to me......if she was that strong, surely she could have broken free?

Some more suspense (or maybe I just missed something) - who was the old woman, and what was her relevance?

I don't have kids, but I've seen enough bratty kids at the movies to make a judgement. Stay the f**k home if your kid can't sit still and you didn't hire a babysitter :)

Bhaskar, the old woman, like the maid, was a little creepy, but nothing more than that.

Typical - I thought she was supposed to have some relevance to the story, especially because of the scene where Ajay walks in and see Urmila sitting in her house staring at her.......
