Don't buy a player that does not output 1080p. The discs are mastered in 1080p. 1080i will most likely be vertically filtered on output.

You are right!! I am right on with you. 1080I is waste even if $200.

Same for display, do not buy if it does not take 1080P direct via HDMI..better wait, till this dusty dance settles a bit!

With the upgrade cycles becoming ever smaller, I would be reluctant to upgrade before the prices fall down. Currently here is what I think the prices have to be before I bite

Name brand DVD player with 1080p support and plays Blue Ray and HD-DVD for below $300
Name brand 32 inch LCD with native 1080p resolution below $1200

Well guys, while if technically there are more favorable things for BR but one big drawback????

BR players are not back ward compatable with current dvds, and wont even play them, while HD players are backward compatable and will not only play all ur current collection but will upscale it too

Like Paramount, Warner also is releasing movies in Blu-ray, but identified only 15 titles for that format (among the missing, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), in part due to that format’s thus-far delayed entry into the marketplace.

Among Universal’s first 10 titles timed to coincide with the introduction of the first HD DVD players in March will be The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Jarhead, Doom, Cinderella Man, Apollo 13 and The Bourne Supremacy.

In addition to The Sopranos, HBO Video, which is distributed by sister company Warner, will also release Deadwood on HD DVD sometime this year.

Warner is releasing Twister as one of its first titles on March 28, nearly nine years to the day that the movie became the first major DVD release.

Other titles planned include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dukes of Hazzard, Rumor Has It and Syriana.

Among the catalog titles from Warner will be Unforgiven (April 11), Goodfellas and The Matrix (April 25), Blazing Saddles (May 9) and The Green Mile Special Edition (May 16).

'many 1080p televisions don't accept 1080p sources at all. In our experience, only the aforementioned HP can handle 1080p via its HDMI inputs--all other current 1080p HDTVs cannot. Instead, they upconvert 720p and 1080i sources to 1080p.

Yes. For best results a 1080p input is needed. But any player will output 1080i
so it will play on any HD ready display.
Nirvana is high bit rate 1080p/72 into a large SED monitor with HDMI 1080p/72 input
and display. 1080p HD with CRT color, 1080p resolution and 100000:1 contrast.

I agree!! My First DVD PLAYER was Base model $500..Still High Ends are over 2 GRANDS!!

But now lowere end are around $50.

as far TVS are concerened they are pretty primed and are available in non direct 1080P format with HDMI, e.g SONY SXRD etc. So 1080P direct, Plasma, LCD, LCD RPTV, FRONT PROJECTOR, and possibly still direct view TV too, should be at variable point prices with a small premium , I guess, based upon, size, type, brand, extra features..
