Anyone seen the entire movie on Blu? I refused to watch the full movie (due to Logos /watermarks) when the BD was with me for a couple of days. I only tested the BD for my friend by playing random scenes and posted a preview at Bluray.com. Recently, a friend of ours told my wife that the movie is good and she is now bent on watching it :( . Is the film any good? I don't want to waste my time and lamp for an average movie with the notorious Logo. :-x

My Preview - I posted this @ Bluray.com last week and thought of posting here as well.
A friend of mine brought the BD of PKSE with him. He wanted to test the BD on my projector. I refused to watch the film due to watermarks issue and not so good review of the film. However, the fellow being my buddy for long time, I kept his request and played the BD skipping through chapters.

A preview from my side watching 20 minutes of random scenes. I took some photos as well.
PQ
+ points

  1. Nice sharp image
  2. Plenty of detail
  3. No objectionable DNR
  4. Image looked nice in some scenes with a kind of filmic and 3D effect

- points
  1. Traces of Edge enhancement.
  2. Contrast boosting - minor blooming on white or light colored objects.
  3. Watermarks - noticed in normal sequences and one song while watching random scenes - what a shame...
  4. Skin tone issues with some scenes. But I could be wrong as I randomly skipped chapters without judging the ambient lighting used in parts of the movie
  5. Overall picture has a slight raised black level making the picture slightly washed out with normal settings. Not severe but it was noticable. Most will not notice this unless you have a critcal eye.

Overall looks nice on a big screen albeit few minor issues (from limited viewing). To me, the issues were not too severe to distract but a proper viewing is required to judge the BD.

AQ: Frankly, I forgot to add this to the preview post at Bluray.com and now I don't remember but I think it sounded alright. One song was quite loud IIRC.

Blu-Ray Player : Sony BDP S350
Projector: Infocus IN82 Full HD DC3 DLP
AVR: Denon AVR 1910
Front and Rears: Q Acoustics 1010i
Centre: Q Acoustics 1000Ci
Sub: Q Acoustics 1000Si

I took few random photos of the projected image - 90 inch image size. The first four are to show the raised black level issue with nomal setting (1 & 3 )and adjusted setting (2 & 4). The first image shows the effect clearly and the 2nd one shows how adjusted settings can help to get rid of the issue. I have slightly overexposed the images to bring out the effect of raised black floor but do keep in mind the Camera's limited dynamic range. Remaining are random shots with adjusted settings.

Note: The images posted here are captured by my camera from a 90 inch projected image, so please do not get armed up with color accuracy and other properties of the screenshots as they do not reflect what I actually see . They are NOT computer captured screenshots and hence should not be used for any comparison.

this business of washed out blacks and needing adjusted settings, it this because these discs are being authored with the wrong calibration settings?

Thanks. Now I need to dodge my wife. I do like Rahul bose but can't stand Mallika.

I would assume so. My theory (I could be wrong) - could be one of the following

1. Source and Display are both set to RGB (don't know why it should be like that) but display can either handle limited range or set to RGB Video colour space
2. The test display sets are not properly calibrated for colour, color space, black level and white level

Having said that, I have no idea why a authoring house would use any of the above? Doesn't make any sense. In a nutshel, my assumption is just as good as anyone else here. Maybe Sunny or other authoring house members can throw some light on this matter.

Bhhol Bhulaiya, Partner, Silsila, De Dana Dan, LAK and many other BDs have this issue and when you look at properly authored BDs like Ghajini, Jodhaa Akbar, RNBDJ, OSO, Heyy Babyy, Wake up Sid and many others, we consumers start thinking why the the issue of black level is not checked at the QC level?

You also get the other extreme side - like Fanaa and Kabhi kabhie where the black level is so crushed that you hardly see any detail. Fanaa is the worst I have seen so far. So, go figure ....

The dissapointing thing is that we wait for a long time and when the BDs are out we don't have the confidence to buy blind anymore and wait for reviews to see if they are authored correctly and in many cases, had to wait for another studio to release the same movie.

thanks.

As for blind buying, you could not do that in the days of dvd, let alone bd.
