Played back Serenity HD DVD!! PQ was awesome, close to HD Film broadcast on directv! But still I think format needs go long ways to become successful, acceptable in each/every household!

I don't know if most people are as impressed with HD compared to DVD the way they liked DVD compared to VHS. There needs to be a huge price drop in HDTVs, as well as a dearth of SDTVs for people to be motivated to buy them. The content is slowly coming out on TV and home video. The whole HDDVD/Blu-ray war certainly doesn't make one want to jump into either format.

Just my 2 cents!!

It's better compressed than any broadcast. The rest is up to the quality of the master.

i agree Mike!! What I saw it was not as impressive as we all saw transitioning from VHS to DVD.

I think, time to stay with your good upscaling players for some time longer!

Ricoh Announces Dual-Format HD-DVD / Blu-ray Solution
Diffraction plate technology may offer a cheap and easy solution to the format battle.
by Gerry Block
July 10, 2006 - EETimes reports that the technology firm Ricoh has announced that it has developed a diffraction plate that will allow a single optical lens and pickup to read and write all optical disk formats, including HD-DVD and Blu-ray.

The technology could allow optical drive manufacturers to bridge the ongoing HD-DVD / Blu-ray format war without expensive multi-laser / lens arrangements. Ricoh will demonstrate the technology at the International Optoelectronics Exhibition near Tokyo beginning July 12th, and has plans to make the tech available to manufactures by the end of the year.

The diffraction plate will allow the optical drive to detect the format of disk inserted and then adjust the laser to read DVDs, CDs, HD-DVDs, and Blu-ray disks. The first generation of the technology will be read-only due to the fact that some energy is lost in the focusing process. When higher power blue-laser technology becomes available, Ricoh will be able to add writing capabilities to the technology.

A cheap and successful solution to the HD-DVD / Blu-ray format battle could be a boon to both manufacturers and consumers. While major manufacturers have expressed interest in combo-players, previously announced plans have been postponed due to cost restrictions. With Sony and Toshiba still at loggerheads and a compromise format looking like a long-shot due to Sony's massive investment in Blu-ray with the PlayStation3, a third-party solution may be exactly what is required to calm the tumultuous situation.

Check out Riddick and "Training Day". Miles ahead of any upsampled DVDs on larger screens.

Warner Home Video Announces First Wave of Blu-ray Launch Titles...

...would be interesting to see how movies on both HD-DVD and Blu-ray compare to each other. I’m guessing it’s going to very hard to tell any difference between the two formats.

I have ordered my first 20 HD-DVDs. I'll buy a second generation Toshiba. I will also buy a BR player since I don't want to miss out on exclusive BR content. If one system dies so be it. I can still play what I have till then. :D

For how much you would pay for that projection TV you could get a 58 inch Panasonic Plasma. IMHO the picture on a plasma is better than on a projection TV.

Hey Zulmies,
Since this topic is going towards TV's now. I need your kind advice's :D .
I am confused between whether to buy a Video projector or a Plasma TV. My budget is at maximum limited to $2500. For that price I will get a plasma but only 50-52". Now everyday i am going greedy and wanna watch a bigger image and at one point of time even thinking of buying that 70" TV too. But then its very costly as well as bulky to move around with me as I do a lot of travelling.
So can someone advice if I buy a good video projector then will the picture quality be atleast comparable to a good LCD TV with atleast 120-150" Image zoom and also what would you say about the picture screens, which one would be better?

Thanks :D ,
Enjoy

Check out http://www.avsforum.com alot of good information on this website!
You and your eyes are the best judge of what's best for you. Go to a store and check out all the different types of TVs you are considering and buy what looks best to you!!

If you are considering plasma, focus on the panasonic models. There are people that will add there favorite picks but any person will be hard pressed to say panny plasmas are not among the top two or three plasmas. Panny is an especially wise choice because the cost have come down dramatically, making them even more attractive.

Difference between DVD (top) and HD-DVD (bottom) - screen grabs nicked from dvdforums.com;

Image

Image

DVD shot is taken from PAL R2 DVD of MI:3.

Since we live in a cynical world, here’s a cynical thought. I’ve noticed more and more recent Hollywood DVDs are not up to the quality that they used to be in the past. Take for example the recent Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Mans Chest DVD (2006, R2 PAL) released a few days ago here in the UK; the video is somewhat dark and lacking in any vibrant colours which is a stark contrast to the Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) DVD which has a much brighter video transfer. Are studios deliberately releasing sub-par DVDs now to push their HD formats?

yikes. looks like an eros transfer. I noticed the trend too. I thought maybe my eyes are deceiving me, due to being exposed to some nice HD content.

HD-DVDs are $15-20 at the local walmart. Based on the racks they have allocated for HDDVDs, and BluRays, it seems they carry a lot more HDDVDs than BluRays, AND they seemed to be selling well? since HDDVD racks were nearly empty. They have an RCA HDDVD player for $450

enjoy, for movies I prefer to have a projector. the size of the screen more than makes up for the few shortcomings a projector has. You should get a projector for movies, and an DLP/LCT/Plasma 32-42" for casual viewing.

a well calibrated projector can do wonders ;)
