Merry Christmas to all!!

Any idea if Ayngaran could release more Blu-rays for 2010 as plenty of awaiting film are coming next year, preferable if those films could be release first on Blu-ray rather than DVD.

Just watched the 'Kuruvi' Blu-ray. I have mixed feelings about this one. The video doesn't seem to be on par, as compared to the earlier Ayngaran releases. Blacks seem a little crushed. Fine detail seems obscured in some scenes, though in other sequences, incl. the songs there is an extraordinary amount of detail. To me it seems that the PQ isn't quite uniform throughout the film. Now, I am just a regular joe with an untrained eye and maybe I am simply overstating things. Maybe the PQ is true to the source and this was how it was meant to be seen..All I am saying is, it just didn't have the same demo quality video that graced some of the earlier Ayngaran releases. I am hoping others who have watched this Blu-ray will chime in with their opinions on this one. The AQ is a different story though - full marks on reproducing a lossless audio track that is sure to give your speakers a thorough workout!

The original DPX file of Kuruvi has crushed black and high contrast levels (except song sequences). It’s what the director wanted as he supervised the DPX process - which was what the blu-ray was made from.

The film was also shot on various cameras (Super 16mm, 35mm) which highlight the detail problems you mentioned. During post production the "Super 16mm" scenes went through NR process to remove unwanted film dirt. This impacted on the detail. Again, this was on the DPX file. (Tamil film-makers produce their films on a shoebudget - you'd be surprised!!)

The blu-ray actually presents the film more truly then the theatrical showing (which was too muddy thanks to prints being incorrectly made by the labs).

Its not my job to improve the director's vision - only to truly presented it :) ALL Ayngaran blu-rays have done this and will continue to do so (while I am there....which may not be for long - more info coming soon).

Thanks for the clarification Sunny - it does explain a lot. Customers like me have blindly been buying Ayngaran Blu-rays just based on their previous track history of putting out quality products on the market. That is why we don't mind paying a lil' bit more than what the other Indian Blu-rays cost. Obviously, the credit for that goes to people like you who are at the helm of things ensuring that a good quality product sees the light of day, without compromising on quality, and making sure that a half-ass product doesn't come out (like some of the other Indian Blu-ray manufacturers seem to be doing).

Tamil Blu-rays rarely get reviewed (if at all) on sites like http://www.blu-ray.com and http://www.hidefdigest.com (which are standard sites where reviews on English Blu-rays can be obtained, before investing your hard-earned money on them). Even if they are reviewed it is usually very late after the Blu-ray release. That is where reputation of the manufacturer comes in (Ayngaran scores very high on that) and I typically buy Ayngaran Blu-rays without reviews. Departure of key personnel like yourself can severely dent that reputation, if the replacement doesn't hold such high values that you have aspired to uphold. I'll keep watching this space for more updates..

I know that you had mentioned "Unnai Pol Oruvan" as a January release. Looking forward to that. What are the subsequent releases planned and when? Thanks as always!

@Sunny - Sad to see you leave Ayngaran man. EROS (who owns Ayngaran) is just quality averse, period. Man this is indeed a sad day.

After Unnaipol Oruvan you'll be seeing Aadhavan, Peranmai, and HD Isal Thendral (song collection - which I'm not supervising).

After that there is nothing for a few months.

I will be working alongside AP international on thier India release of Kandukodian. Ayngaran might also release the same version outside India. However, progress on this is slow as we are still doing a lot of R & D work on the HD telecine process to ensure the best quality.

I really appreciate comments from everyone here. It means a lot to me. Thanks :)

Kandukondain Kandukondain is a beautiful movie that definitely deserves HD treatment. However, it is also likely to be a huge challenge, as it was a movie that came out a decade ago. Glad to hear that you are going slow on that, ensuring that the best possible product sees the light of day..

Hi Sunny

I'm yet to get on to the blu ray bandwagon but I've been downloading samplers of HD clips from the internet just to check out the quality. I must say HD is a different world altogether. I have a friend who's started buying most of the Indian blu rays so I get to sample all the titles at his place.

I registered on the forum only today even though I've been going through this forums for years! Strange, but it struck me that I should register only today!

What I wanted to ask was, when are the Peraanmai and Aadhavan blu rays by Ayngaran expected approximately ?

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Warm regards,
Venkat

The Kanthaswamy Blu-ray is another winner from the Ayngaran stable. The PQ is reference-grade paralleling Sivaji. But, don't expect the same kind of picture though. It showcases the unique colour palette and the hues that were present throughout the whole film, with even the film grain being reproduced faithfully. The AQ is again A+. There is no other way to describe it. Like I mentioned earlier, though the movie by itself isn't too good at all, the Kanthaswamy Blu-ray is a worthy challenger to Sivaji's mantle as the best Indian Blu-ray

That is a lot to say dr_vasanth, for a really really really.... really awful movie.

I can't believe that i'm actually THINKING of buying Nonthasamy!!!

The HD Song collection is coming along very well. I am hoping to try and introduce some cool interactive features. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Very glad to see the HD song collection is coming well. For interactive features, What about BD-live? but with BD live we must need internet connection.
My recommendations will be to integrate movie trailers, Ayngaran news information, Information about each songs with details including cast,crew,singers,etc...; Ayngaran quizzes, Interviews and Commentaries with members of Ayngaran Studio, Karaoke tracks. I think, those features will be great.
What audio track will you use for the HD collection? Any releasing date?

Yarulb Latigid has some great suggestions, but ultimately, I think that most buyers would be heavily swayed by the choice of songs that are gonna make it to the actual collection. Hopefully, the songs are well-chosen and any special features that can be integrated would truly be a wonderful bonus!
