A wonderful comedy adaptation of "The Prince and The Pauper", but with a slight satirical zing to it. Vedivelu is the star of this production. His presence is akin to the Marathi comic actor Dada Kondke. His performance as the ignorant king and the revolutionary is suited to the screenplay and allows him to display his all-round film acting range. After watching this film one wished that more film directors would use his talents moreso. Additional cast luminaries like Nassar and Manorama play an important part to give this low-budget film a serious lift.

The film has some flaws, namely its low production values and its preachy ending. However, viewers normally bypass these flaws and immense themselves for a great time. It’s very easy to see why this film was one of India’s highest grossing pictures in 2006.

The DVD has a few issues. The source used was from a 35mm interpositive, which was supervised by the film's production company. Contractually, they also insisted on the telecine work and DVD encoding. They chose to transfer the negative on a Rank-Cintel URSA-DIAMOND telecine machine onto a digibeta tape, in PAL interlaced. They then did a standards conversion from PAL to NTSC and encoded the video for the DVD format.

The overall quality of the DVD is simply average. The DVD features optional English subtitles and selectable 5.1 Tamil Dolby Digital and DTS tracks.

Ayngaran have improved, immensely. Watch out for them on the HD platform!

I also admire the work done by I-dreams/KAD. They too deserve commendations for thier DVD efforts.

In terms of soundtracks, they are looking at either HD DTS or Uncompressed PCM 5.1. They might test a few titles in the market to see the customers reaction.
