i found this article at dvdanswers.com ..
i dont know if this is a good thing or bad..

Quote:
DivX has announced today that they have secured a partnership with India based UTV to distribute DVD media containing DivX encoded movies. DivX who are the digital entertainment company that produce their namesake file format, will license the technology that allows a distributor to encode several high-quality and secure movies onto a single disc. The main drawback of such a technique is playback devices (such as DVD players) must be DivX-certified in order to read and understand these discs.

Ronnie Screwvala, CEO of UTV said "As new technologies emerge to give consumers greater control and more choices in viewing entertainment content, UTV is very happy to partner with DivX. Distributing our content in the DivX format will give our consumers more options. Our goal is to enable our users to enjoy more content, quality and value in entertainment whenever and wherever they choose."

Whilst Aparna Vashisht-Rota, Business Development, at DivX, Inc. commented, "By partnering with UTV, DivX can continue to expand and reach the global community in effort to create and build a better media future for consumers everywhere."

UTV concentrate their movie distribution business within India, holding the rights to hundreds of titles from both Bollywood and Hollywood. The first titles to be released on DivX DVDs include: The Myth, Swades, Main Meri Patni Aur Woh, Sin City, Unleashed and Pulp Fiction.

I’ve said it before, but downloadable digital content is it the future.

The same way people scorn at downloadable movies now because they are ‘pirate’ in a few years time will be paying for them and it’ll be all okay and ‘trendy’ to download movies. The same happened with MP3s and downloadable music content - as soon as medium become mature enough (read: can make money from it) studios will offer them for downloads. I found this news story quite funny,

Kazaa site becomes legal service

…. Kazaa the spawn of piracy core! And it’s happened before with Napster, both born and matured through piracy. Same will happen with movie download sites.

I wish FiOS was available in my area. It's cheaper AND faster than my cable connection.

but I wouldn't pay to download subpar videos. unless they can match/beat DVD quality, for the time being :p

i dont know if UTV would release umpteen-movies-in-one..as they would be losing money..

then i started thinking..would the quality of movies on this format from utv on dvd be better? because it is encoded in mpeg4..
