Director Sanjay Gupta’s Kaante is a desi copy of the Hollywood film Reservoir Dogs. The director says he has Indianised the script and adapted it for our audiences. A lavish film as most of it was shot in Los Angeles, Kaante went through a series of crippling financial problems when its producer, diamond merchant Bharat Shah was arrested. After that the production was taken over by Pritish Nandy Communications, a media company set up by former journalist editor Pritish Nandy.
Six perfect strangers, one perfect crime. That's the basic storyline of the action flick. Sanjay Gupta, Sanjay Dutt and Anurag Kashyap wrote the screenplay for the film. The movie begins with the release of a notorious, but a very intelligent gangster, Major (Amitabh Bachchan), from prison. Sick of life behind bars, he decides to commit one big robbery that will set him up for life. He plans to rob a bank, but realizes that he needs five tough guys to help him out. So Major puts the word out for men who have the relevant skills to help him do the job. They are to get 1/6th of the loot each. The first person to be recruited is an infamous bank robber, Ajju (Sanjay Dutt), a man with a very violent streak. The rest follow - a drug addict and petty thief, Baali (Mahesh Manjrekar), The Bouncer (Sunil Shetty) and Mak (Lucky Ali) are the next in line. The sixth man is an undercover cop Andy (Kumar Gaurav), who is put on the job of infiltrating the gang and apprehending the criminals, after the word of the robbery leaks out. Everything is planned to the minutest detail. The six then take on different personas and names so nobody knows their real identities. They are instructed not to talk about the heist to anyone. Ajju breaks the rules and tells his greedy wife (Shilpa Shetty) about the job. She coaxes him into murdering the rest of the team and taking all the loot when the job is over. On the day of the planned robbery, the six make their way to the bank, hold people at gunpoint and rob the bank. Unfortunately for the six, the cops land up. All six pull out their guns and what follows is a bloody shootout where many cops die. The six escape, of course, with some injuries, and make their way to the derelict warehouse where they had planned the entire robbery. Major is first to arrive on the scene with Andy who is somewhat more injured than the rest during the shootout. It's quite apparent that they were setup and there is a mole among them, either a police informant or worse still, a cop. Ajju is in two minds: should he wait till they find out, who the mole is or should he kill them all and make his way off with all the money? Andy is now worried: will his cover be blown and will he face his end here? What follows is a game of Russian roulette with each of the six pointing their guns at each other, in search of that elusive mole.
According to Gupta, Kaante has been his most ambitious film to date. He says, "I was not as excited about the other films I have directed, as I have been about Kaante. I had a great team of stars and actors! Amitabh, Sanju and Mahesh Manjerekar. It was an unusual combination." The film has two music albums. One is the original soundtrack and the other is inspired by the motion picture. The film has seven music composers - Viju Shah, Lucky Ali, Shiamak Davar, Adnan Sami, Sulaiman and Salim Merchant and A.R. Rahman. Kaante is set to release in the first week of June.
