I just got the Son of India DVD...and I'm confused. It's in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio...and it's in color — lol. I though this film was 4:3, B&W. Comments?

This is correct. It is in colour and was released in a wide aspect ratio (not sure exactly what the original aspect ratio was but it was not 4:3).

The film is not that good - watch it for the songs ... they are great!

In fact I was tempted to buy this just to watch the 'Diya na bujhe' and 'Aaj chedo mohobat ki shehnai' songs. I didn't pick it up as it was an Eros DVD and I was unsure as to how well the film has been presented. Any comments on the transfer?

Mehboob Khan made this movie after Mother India and as far as I know he was showcasing the talent of the boy who played 'Birju' in Mother India. I can't remember much about the story aside from the young lad is on the run from something.

A 10 year old, alone in the world, on the run for survival I guess. Perhaps villains were after him??

(After Mother India, Son Of India from same makers)
It was a big film (and in color) in every respect except for lead pair. And perhaps that was the reason for it's failure.

Kanwaljeet (Shagoon; Waheeda married him later) was introduced and KumKum or Simmi was the heroine. Jayant (Amjad Khan's dad) was the villain. Lead pair is separated (and in distress) for some reason (don't remember why) and child is perhaps theirs.

Best song, repeated a few times was(KumKum-Simmi and/ or Kanwaljeet were Radio Singers):
"Ae Dil Todne Wale,
Tujhe Dil Dhoondh Raha Hai"

Another song (SRK sung these lines in MHN recently):
"Nanhan Munnah RaahimHoon
Pyar Ka Sipahee Hoon
Bole Mere Sung Jai Hind Jai Hind".

The film may not have recovered its money due to absense of stars (introducing Kanwaljeet and presenting KumKum (or was it Simmi) in a big way in a big film), it was a nice film.

Note, only 4-5 Hindi films had been made in color by that time.

As far as I remember it's in color! with memorable music from Naushad. There are two songs that I remember to this day "Tujhe Dil Dhoond" and " Zindagi Aaj Mere". Yeah, and young KuKum a delight to watch!

Forgot about these two songs. So many melodious songs, in color, and film failed?? It was just that it did not have big lead pair.

If I recall correctly, it had KumKum, as well as, Simmi in it.

I popped the disc into my DVD player last night, but only for a few moments (it was late). The transfer was acceptable for a film of that age (it wasn't stellar, but surprisingly "not bad"...especially for Eros). Really, I just got it because it was cheap (Eros's "Diwali Sale": $3 [I think]), and I wanted the song, "Nanna Munna Rahi Hoon." I'll watch the entire film some time, and post my comments; I doubt that it'll be another Mother India, but I don't expect it to be "horrible," either.

*By the way, it turns out that the opening credits state, "technicolor, cinemascope." It's strange, however, that the sides of the words are cut off; the thing is 2.35:1...we should be seeing it all. (We get something like, "chnicolor, mascop.")

He was searching for his father!

Are you sure Simmi was in it? She's one of my favorite and I would have remembered if she was! By the way this is the first movie I saw KumKum in, and swore that when I grew up I'll marry her. All plans went well except my calculation was off by 1 degree ( was never good at math anyway ) hence our path never crossed!

Simmi was indeed in the film. Her name was Simmi...something (not Grewal) at the time.

Maybe the OAR is 2.55:1?

EROS may be in trouble here, if they didn't edit out a Sajjid scene that will be illegal under US, Canada laws. :P

This scene may be interpretted as innocent and essential for the plot, but still may be illegal here.

-------------------------------

After seeing the screen shots, I recall the story plot as KumKum being a Radio Singer. Perhaps, Kanwaljit too.
It's good against bad, Jayant being a pwerful political corrupt.
Simi helps Kanwaljit and assumes/ dreams a romantic song with Kanwaljit.

In this backdrop, child Sajjid is left alone in the world.
