Hi guys,

I'm reading a lot about Upscalers that can take regular dvds from 480i to 1080 for HD quality output, I'm getting the new DVDO iScan VP30.
The blurb below makes it sound great, just wondering if anyone has used a scaler or an upscaler dvd player and what kinda results it gives? My display is a projector so it is a big picture and I'm hoping it will make a BIG difference!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The DVDO® iScan™ VP30 is the next generation high-resolution video processor and A/V switcher that sets a new standard for up, down, and cross-con-verting all of your video sources. Whether it's your 480i cable feed, 480p DVD player, or 720p or 1080i HD set-top-box signal-the iScan VP30 scales your video output to perfectly match the optimum resolution of your display, up to 1080p! Plus, it's HDCP compliant over each of the 4 digital HDMI inputs, and accepts any legacy 480i/480p analog sources.

Serving as your complete A/V hub, the iScan VP30 provides simultaneous audio/video switching with "any rez in - any rez out" video conversion and one clean wire to your display. Add the iScan VP30 to your home theater today and prepare to be visually Captivated!

what projector do you have?

I hear only good things about Oppo's $200USD DVD player. I need to get one, but I'm too lazy to do so. Only other players that can match it are $1000+. It doesn't have HDMI, only DVI. I hear good things about it from a fellow zulmi, who has the same projector :)

DVD iScan is just too expensive. as an alternative you can use an "HTPC" for upconversion/filtering. Gives you greater control. FFDShow is a great utility, and its free.

I did try that!! It was not to my liking.

1. DVI only.
2. was not syncing with my HDMI input at 1080i.
3 MB due to Faroudja chip!

Whatever!! Exception or not!! These things are not 100% match with all systems, Projectors or not!!

use Denon 3910, pioneer 59avi or Marantz 9600

I think in this category panasonic S77 and S97 are other one of best options.

I've got a panasonic 500 its a couple of years old now and has a dvi input not hdmi. But this box allows any input/ouput etc so should be good. It also has a lip synch delay feature which should sort out the problem arsh bhai is saying too with a bit of luck.

Its due to arrive anyday now! I have my Revenge of the Sith dvd ready to test it out!

HD quality is unavailable from DVD sources no matter what scaler you use. It's still SD, not HD. But a good scaler can reduce granularity and bring out detail better. And if the scaler in your digital monitor/projector is bad a good external scaler can bypass it.

Err...I have an ED Projector. It doesn't even present HD in HD Detail, hehe, but it's damn good for the price and size of the image. just lacking in resolution, but I don't feel the need for it atm. I'm not too sure about these stand alone players..but with some HTPC filters, I've noticed a significant improvement in PQ.

For special events, such as NBA games or LOST, projector is the only way to go. Only problem I have is that I don't have a blackened/darkened room :(
