DVD reviews and ratings serve a very useful purpose. Based on the review or rating, you can make a knowledgeable decision whether to buy a DVD or not.

Unfortunately, different reviewers have different yardsticks. A 5 star rating by one may not be worth even a single star by another reviewer. I am aware of the fact that different reviewers have different yardsticks and hence always look at rating score and who gave it.

Ali, too, has stated in another thread:
“I wouldn’t take any review on here as gospel as I’ve said many a times the reviews are pretty much personal opinions (like any other review); take on board collective comments from all people here and make your own mind up if the DVD is for you or not. Hmmm I should have a politician

Ali ”

In many threads zulm members have complained that they bought a DVD based on info linked to zulm and they found DVD to be crap. The most complained title has been Dil To Paagal Hai which according to Indian DVD World has earned a 4 star rating, same as R2 ASOKA, same as DEI FIZA. Indian DVD World has justified it as being based on zulm review.

It will be useful to post some kind of a disclaimer stating the variation in DVD assessment by different reviewers.

Thanks.

Rana

Forget the disclaimer at the end of a post, the reader should just disclaim the people who post on this board altogether. The people who review DVDs dont review them, they cry about them, nothing satisfies them. Best way to find out if a DVD is worth it, is to rent it, ask a friend, ask anybody who has an opinion besides "uh....it sucks, cause the second disc with 4 hours of extra footage should have more, possibly another movie on the other side of the disc"...... :plain:

Take them as they come ;) Some people cry about DVDs and nothing will satisfy them. Then they are those who cry about other people crying; nothing satisfies them either

I didn’t realise DTPH was such a ‘complained’ about title. I’ll have to go back and re-check this DVD, it was a while back since I last took a looked. Looking back I don’t think I’ll rate is the same as before if I reviewed it now.

Acknowledged, there needs to some explanation of what the rating mean, which are based (read copied :p ) on IMDB DVD ratings. So I think I’ll copy the explanations too and mirror them here for reference :gob:

Zulm.net doesnt in any way endorse any DVD based on reviews presented here. Ali how would this disclaimer be ? Can it be added somewhere on the reviews page ? ( This is just an idea of what I am insinuating )

i think its hard to make a decision on buying a dvd based on information from a review...I reviewed Kuch Kuch Hota Hai ages ago..and i gave it a near perfect score..but that was ages ago..as time changes so do they quality of dvds...mostly... and indian dvds have been improving as time goes on...so the dvd might have been great for that time...but now..it looks crap compared to some of the new stuff that comes out.....and if i remember correctly..dil to pagal hai was reviewed when zulm.net was still learning to walk...

I beg to differ. In my opinion Indian DVDs have gone down in quality over the years rather than improve. And if they were bad earlier, then they are even worse now.

I think it's stupid to worry about people who disagree with zulm.net reviews, for two reasons:

1) Anyone with wits understands that a FORUM is a space for the opinions of numerous people -- that there is no one "expert" on the zulm.net forum, and that all opinions are INDIVIDUAL.

2) Different people look for different things in DVDs, and that is reflected here. You have one person who obviously values extras more than top-notch audio/visual quality, and he mentions that in his (comparative) praise of the DDLJ DVD. Others knock the DDLJ DVD because they value sound/visual quality over extras -- and that is clear in their approval of some pirate versions over the official YRF release. So if someone is incapable of interpreting each review in regards to his or her own personal taste, then that's their problem.

After all, there isn't one official standard for DVD quality, is there? If you really feel a disclaimer is necessary, maybe you should instead outline a quality standard for zulm.net, by which all DVDs will be judged on this forum. But if you do that, you're going to shut down some people who can't navigate the intricacies of DVD technology, though they can sure tell when a DVD sucks so bad they wish they hadn't bought it.
