Wondered if anyone here has seen this...having seen Dattani's plays in Bangalore, must say he has the talent to dazzle on stage....but then film is a different medium and not everybody graduates well.....though there have been plenty who have done rather well....Amol Palekar, Ramesh Talwar, heck even Mahesh Manjrekar.......i am curious to see how this movie's been made.....

Rediff review earlier;

The sexuality question

Deepa Gumaste | February 28, 2003 15:17 IST

Bangalore playwright Mahesh Dattani's debut movie, Mango Souffle, is an adaptation of his play, On A Muggy Night In Mumbai. It throws up the issue of sexual identity, which is very much buried under the carpet of Indian morality.

Unlike Deepa Mehta's Fire, which handled a delicate lesbian relationship between two sisters-in-law from a firmly middle-class family from old Delhi, Dattani's story is strictly about a hip metro crowd leading seemingly superficial lives.

Dattani for Commonwealth Fest

Mahesh Dattani Mango Souffle that took a close look at homosexuality in urban life will screened at the Commonwealth Film Festival to be held at Manchester this year. Also the film has gained immense popularity in the UK. Unlike here in India where most theatres showing the film were empty, in the UK the theatres showing the film were filled to capacity. But Mahesh Dattani has moved on! He has already planned another film based on one of his earlier plays that will hit the floor soon.

This DVD has been released and I just ordered it from Netflix...has anyone here seen the DVD and knows about its quality? I am intrigued by this movie. Having seen the wonderful plays Mahesh Dattani used to stage in Bangalore, I really hope there is something meaty to the whole thing! I shall report my findings soon enough I guess :-)

OK...caught MANGO SOUFFLE on DVD yesterday night(based on his play ON A MUGGY NIGHT IN MUMBAI).....a fairly shoddy production actually....as suspected Dattani's graduation from stage to celluloid is bumpy....he struggles to come to grips with the medium not understanding how to tell a tale mainly through the use of visual shots and a moving camera.....i am sure the play would have been dramatic and powerful.....both the lead actors Atul Kulkarni and Rinkie Khanna prove somehow inadequate....it's a brave film without doubt...some of the supporting cast do extremely well....but overall the film drags at most levels....this will go into the annals of Indian film making as the first of its kind that tried to address the sexual identity crisis in the Indian context, but that is about all....
