what IW (or any online retailer) has possibly the replicated disc. this is probably the very first shemaroo dvd that hit the North American Market.

however, there is second release of this dvd which has better print and sound.

The second release of the Mughal-E-Azam is the exact replica of the first release. The menu, prints same. However they changed the cover. I noticed the same with Sangam, i was expecting a re-done version of sangam. Alas!

arsh, can you kindly send me the just the menus of the pakeezah dvd, i want to see they are same as the first release or actually re-done.

enjoy, if you buy MEA from here, expect the worse. replicated disc, freezing problem, etc. if you are one of those who like inlay cards, well you wont get them.

:O :O

I have purchased Shemaroo's MUGHAL-E-AZAM from IW for $4.99. Its the same cover as shown above, in a white case with no inlay card. So far I have noticed only one scene that freeze - its toward the end during the colour song Khuda Nigehban Ho, before Anarkali is taken away to be bricked alive. Could that spot of freezing be in all dvds, including the ones from India?

Mughul-e-Azam is going back to IW - its freezing problem appears to be progressing. IW is sending some shemaroo titles with inlay cards, others without them, some titles have a marketed in USA and Canada by Bombay music sticker, others don't, some freeze, others don't... Can't establish any patterns, but can confirm the current Mughal-e-Azam sale is a shamble!

dvds without inlay cards are what i considered, replicated dvds. above is the inlay card for my MEA.

and as you noticed armaan, shemaroo titles are marketed by "bombay music" (same folks who does the infamous SKY brand dvds..), that means those were made here in states. those without, i dont know how did you come across them, they usually the ones from india directly. It usually states the maximum retail price in Rupees. can you tell me which are those titles that are without the sticker please.

I receive ALL my dvds from IndiaWeekly.

The following Shemaroo DVDs were sent with inlay cards, and no sticker, ie maximum retail price in rupee is stated:

Ashanti
Ganga Ki Saugandh
Parvarish
Patthar Aur Payal
Lal Patthar
Tere Mere Sapne
Chhupa Rustom

The following Shemaroo DVDs were sent with NO inlay cards, and Bombay Music sticker covering up the maximum price:

Mughal-e-Azam
Aavishkar

With the exception of Mughal-e-Azam, none of the dvds mentioned so far have any identified freezing problems.

Pakeezah breaks the pattern - there is an inlay card and a Bombay Music sticker (no freezing problems so far)

Arzoo appears to be pirate - Shemaroo logo, but no hologram, and no inlay card (minor freezing problems so far)

I'm thinking about getting this. Is it worth $4.99? The Zulm preview says it has excessive DNR artifacts. How is the DNR compared to Pakeezah?

I watched the Shemaroo version yesterday. It's an import from India with inlay card.
The DVD sucks. The DNR is horrible and the 'smooth vision' rubbish. The pearl necklaces
of the males are dancing around with no connection to the body. It looks grotesque.
Fine detail is a mess from DNR and sometimes compression too. It's all the more annoying
as the basic transfer is quite decent. Take away the DNR, raise the bit rate and you have
a good looking DVD with little to no EE.
The film itself I find overrated. It looks dated. The males are stiff and theatrical and the thin
story is extended way beyond what it can support. I enjoyed the cinematography and the
sets are nice too, but direction and editing are mediocre.
Colorizing the whole thing will not make it better, probably worse, as the dramatic color
change is gone. Many shots work because they are black and white. If they become anything
but pastel color they become unbearably tacky.
I also wonder what they will do with the 2K sharpness and some not so flattering shots
of Madhubala's skin (pock marks?). Retouch her digitally? FIlter the shots? (Some shots are
already using a filter for that purpose anyway, it seems).

Does it mean, the new enhanced DVD version (still the old B&W release) is Field Averaged??

The earlier release was Film to NTSC telecine (every fifth field was repeated field).
