Hi there -

Having checked this we can confirm it is a 2-disc set - disc one will
have part 1 of the feature film plus added value (including deleted
scenes), disc 2 will have part 2 of the film.

Pricing will be up to the retailers so you could check online with for
example Amazon, Blackstar or HMV prior to release.

Hope this is helpful -

Kind regards,

The CTHE Team

Subject: Fw: lagaan DVD

Please can you tell me what is going on with Lagaan.
It has been nominated at the Oscars so deserves a 2 disc set with good picture/sound.
Please confirm?

I assume from the above that it will be presented like Lawrence of arabia

A little warning. Columbia PAL DVDs suffer from bad
downsampling. They have more aliasing than NTSC versions.
If you watch the DVD progressively you will notice this
quickly on good equipment. Because of this I have stopped
buying their PAL stuff. Also sound is speeded up 4% which
annoys some golden ears.

Date keeps changing on this; originally it was March, then changed to May and now stores have put it forward to March again ??? I was told by CT that it's been delayed till May. Keep checking R2 stores for dates, I find this site useful;

Play have updated the Lagaan disk details.

Date 27.5.02
Price £17.99
Film is split across 2 disks!

Confirms what CT originally told me in February.

Blackstar.co.uk says pretty much the same thing, although they still haven’t put a price on it :where:

Play.com lists the same extras as R1, but no details have been confirmed by CT, although they have confirmed the release date on R2 Project as May 27th;

Personally, I was hoping for Lagaan to be split across two discs. R1 disc has the feature on one dual layered disc and there are some compression problems evident as Lagaan is a remarkably long film. Trying to fit the film on to one dual disc with PAL resolution (which is slighter higher than of NTSC) would have made Lagaan look pretty bad.

This way at least you ensured (well nearly ensured! ) a quality PAL transfer that will look much better than R1 DVD – in theory anyway – only the added quality comes with a trade off that you have to swap the disc half through - I’m assuming and hoping the disc needs swapping half way through (sensible at the intermission), CT still could botch this up. If extras are the same as R1, i.e. one deleted scene and few static screens then it would not warrant a second dual layered disc – more likely a single layered disc will be used as a second disc – meaning that film might not get split half way. That would look nasty. With any luck that wont be the case.

NOT FAIR!
Damn it, after Lagaan wins the oscar, why not a 2-dvd version for us in America?

One things about CT is that there not shy of re-releasing titles over and over again. Could possibly be R1 gets a dual disc release later on too.

More info on R2 Project;

LAGAAN VHS & DVD RELEASE
Release Date: 27TH MAY 02
Cert: PG
DVD Run Time: 216 MINS
DVD RRP: £24.99

Once upon a time in India one of Bollywood's biggest films was made. Lagaan is released on 27th May on rental and retail VHS and DVD release courtesy of Columbia TnStar Home Entertainment.

The rains have failed and the people of a small Indian village in Victorian India hope that they will be excused from paying the crippling land tax that their British rulers have imposed. Instead, the capricious British officer in charge challenges them to a game of cricket, a game totally alien and unknown to them. If they win, they get their wish; if they lose, however, the increased tax burden will destroy their lives. The people are terrified, but one man thinks the challenge is worth staking their entire future on. Will he convince the villagers to give it their best shot?

Lagaan has recently been nominated for the Best Foreign Picture Academy Award at the 2002 Oscars.

The DVD extras of Lagaan include 15 mins of deleted scenes and much more! "

..best bit is the end three words :gob: I wonder what much more could include :turn:

BTW DVD Popcorn has it for £15.99 - considering RRP is £24.99, looks like a good price for this dual disc.

Thanx Ali,
for guiding the way.
Just an idea that crossed my mind, since columbia usualy releases titles with several european languages on them i suspect a later (as in 2nd) Pal release as well if the film gets an oscar.
Such films will be released in germany too, but it's custumary to dub them for a greater market.
Since the german videomarked is one of the largest in europe it is much likely that it will be released here, though maybe not by Columbia - they do give foreign titles to other companys sometimes.
So far i have not heard of an existing dub wich will mean it might even be a different master from the first one.
Sadly Kinowelt went down the drain, otherwise they would have been a likely company to do it instead of columbia - their Special 2Disk Edition of "Tiger and Dragon" realy kicked some behinds, it had loads of extras and DTS Sound plus a nicely custom-designed, folded digipack package in a cardboard box.
Oops already 3:30 in the morning, got to go to bed now.
