I've heard some mixed reviews about Ash's early Tamil movie, JEANS. Is this movie good or more or less stupid? Or is it just a movie to watch just for the song-and-dance scenes?? I thought that director Shankar and composer A.R. Rahman are a good mix especially with BOYS.....

Also, how is the Tamil DVD version of this movie - does it have ENGLISH subtitles during song-and-dance-scenes, DD 5.1, and anamorphic video? I have heard of two dvd versions of this flick, which is better?

I like this film for its entertainment value and not whether it's stupid or not. One small sequence that is stupid (PC displaying 3D animation and film characters believing that as real), is less stupid than someone making us believe in Time Travel (Back to the Future, ---). Some angles in story are very believable (family quarrels). AR Rehman music and picturizing 7 wonders of the world is comparable to the best. Plus, if you like/ liked Aish, she has glamourous role (just a short time after winning Miss Universe/ Miss World title).

DEI-EROS DVD is/ was the best print available. Even if DEI-EROS Hindi version is not anamorphic, it's Progressive. Among DEI-EROS titles, Jeans is one of the better ones. I doubt it's tamil version (interlaced) will be better than the Hindi version.

Good Songs + Silly special effects =Shankar movie. The climax/wedding scene is laughably bad.

Tamil version is anamorphic with DD 5.1. The picture quality is ok. The colors seem to be washed out.

I found it to be incredibly stupid. It could have worked as a light comedy, but Shankar throws in too much of the crying and drama and sad scenes, and it seems like he is taking this story way too seriously. The songs are good, though this is not one of Rahman's best albums.

Someone posted comparison shots between the Eros-DEI and the Ayngaran discs once.

I AGREE!! I think SHANKAR as usual had a GREAT INTERESTING STORY/PLOT on hand!! That was STUPIFIED!!

I find dvd very good, and songs show some good locales! Aish does look good!!

I always like NASIR!

Spoilers.................

Thats what I thought about BOYS too. It'd have been a great little coming of age movie. But then Shankar has to go in a kill a guy in a horrible freak accident. This was just to create some cheap melodrama. I got nothing against sad endings or death of actors if everything was done in context. IMO, that kind of melodrama doesn't belong in a light hearted fun flick like BOYS and that ruined the movie for me. And also the cheap animation in the BOOM BOOM song didnt help either.

:baaa:

That wasn't the only thing melodramatic in Boys.

SPOILERS

The kids all leave the house and they all do various crummy jobs like pumping gas (though the scenes with the one boy and Senthil were funny) and live in a little hut with the water pump, and later all the boys go to jail for recording the song for that revolutionary group or whatever they were. Shankar seems to want a violent, dark, light, funny, romantic film all in one, and the tone shifts are really odd.

Shankar does write good plots (his best is Indian). Although I like the film Jeans it is very weak when compared with the other movies he has directed...the FX is crap in places as is the "Dinosaur" ending!! But the film has some good comedy moments, and wonderful songs... EROS DVD is not the same as the DEI/EROS version and is bad quality. I would advise to get the Ayngaran version, as it is the director's original version..shot in his own language plus it is anamorphic and presented in its original aspect ratio. Ashok Amitraj (who produces many Hollywood films) produced the Tamil version and was responsible for getting the license for JEANS to use the Jurassic Park Dino...so we can thank him for the god awful ending...

What I really admire in this film is the flashback scenes...its very well shot and very dark in tone...

Performance wise Nazir steals the film, and Lasksmi gets me in stiches as the doting grandmother...as for Ash Rai, she doesn't really do much in the film other then to look preety!!

Her best performance comes from either Iruvar, Kandukodian or Choker Bali. These are the films I would solely recommend if you want to watch some fine (and importantly versatile) acting moments from her...

I totally agree!!I liked script of all his films, jeans, nayak, indian etc!

Jeans with all its weakness, i can watch again.

Indian is one of my absolute favourite film

Nayak as it was a REMAKE , I have my reservations, but I always said ORIG Tamil version of Nayak was better too, with better casting!

Can u give us some screen shots of TAMIL JEANS SUnny?

It really is appallingly bad, but entertainingly so. The first time I watched it, the "Kehta Hai Mera Yeh Dil" song had me rolling on the ground. Funny stuff. The songs are terrific as well. But stupid movie. Yes.

EDIT: Oh, and...

I would agree normally, but if an actor's voice is dubbed by another person, I think it destroys the quality of the work. Whenever I watch those films (the first two), I can't help but feel I'm not watching an authentic Rai performance. And from what I hear, it's the same for Choker Bali. Quite bothersome.

Maybe so but I believe firmly that good acting comes from good screenplay, quality direction and expression filled body language of the actors. Voice is just an incentive...

Cant agree more!! with Sunny!!

But voice/dialogue delievry/conveying emotions etc through your voice, without shrieking!! makes a big difference too!! E.g JOHN and BIPASHA stink literally!! Without dubbing!!I meant more than USUAL!

Exactly...this seems to be one aspect of many Tamil films in general that I can't palate - and Shankar epitomises it. His films leave me with a very sick feeling and usually cursing my way out of the hall. Indian and Jeans are two of the stupidest, idiotic, embarrassing, tastelessly extravagant films ever made in India and I am truly ashamed that Indians can't seem to tell what's wrong with the films, especially Indian, which was a hit.

And whose bright idea was it to cast that gross looking thing opposite Aishwarya in Jeans. I mean, that's like next to blasphemy!
