PAKISTANI SERIAL REVIEW: DHOOP KINARAY
Director: Saira Kazmi
Starring: Rahat Kazmi, Mareena Khan, Badar Khalil, Arshed Mahmood and Sajid Hassan.
INTRODUCTION: Whilst Indian entertainment fans mainly prefer Bollywood films to television serials, the situation is completely opposite in Pakistan. The country’s drama serials have a fantastic track record and loyal following around the world, especially in comparison to films. In particular, the golden oldie Dhoop Kinaray is fondly remembered one of the best ever Pakistani dramas, not only loved by the general public, but famous celebrities too! “I have always loved watching serials that were made in Pakistan and simply adored watching Dhoop Kinaray,†Bollywood heartthrob Hrithik Roshan recently confessed. Now available on DVD, Radio Sargam decided to pass its verdict!
PLOT: The story’s main characters are Dr Ahmer (Rahat Kazmi) and Dr Zoya Khan (Mareena Khan). Dr Ahmer is the senior in the profession whose suffered some bad experiences in his private life, which have left him bitter. On the other side of the spectrum is Dr Zoya. She’s a young and full of life individual, who wants to be independent and enjoy life.
Their first meeting isn’t exactly joyful. Dr Zoya parks her car in Dr Ahmer’s designated parking space. This leads to tension but they soon reach common ground thanks to certain cases at work that brings them together. Love slowly blossoms but certain things keep them apart… will they overcome the problems and find happiness?
VIDEO/VISUALS
The DVD is Wide and Full Screen. However because the serial is dated the picture is very grainy and the quality fluctuates.
AUDIO/SOUNDTRACK
Dolby Digital but loses sound in some areas; again this is because it is quite an old production. The sound itself was filmed in sync sound and only certain scenes have been dubbed in the traditional way. The background poetry when Dr Ahmer thinks about his Baba (by Faiz Ahmed) is touching.
EXTRA FEATURES:
None
VERDICT: The story is absolutely brilliant and explores various different relationships with depth and emotion. However the serious moments are mixed with bits of comic relief, provided by a parallel love story between Anji (Kehkashan Awan) and Dr Iran (Sajid Hassan). The performances are subtle and realistic. The serial works despite having a small budget and the glitz normally associated with entertainment.
Dhoop Kinaray was originally aired in 1985 and become an instant classic. It’s a shame the drama wasn’t given a DVD release with digitally re-mastered print. Unfortunately with the bad picture and at some times very bad sound, the viewer feels let down. However the fact that its eventually been released on DVD is nice, especially for fans.
If you have seen any Urdu drama previously you will definitely enjoy Dhoop Kinaray, but bare in mind the drama is over twenty years old. Technology has changed; the quality of the filming is not brilliant, however the acting shines through. Despite filling two DVDs, it should keep drama fans hooked!
