This project is at the moment going some development. Ayngaran are trying to get the High Def master tape of the final grade/edit cut of the film to make a direct digital transfer onto DVD from it.

Although 35mm films like Kaante, Kaakee, Main Hoon Na has gone through high def colour correction and grading (which means there is a high def version of these films in existence). Companies like EROS still use the poor 35mm positives for their DVD transfers. Ayngaran are now trying to see if they can go directly to the source. I'll let you know if this project has plans to go full ahead, but would like some feedback on this topic...please do not digress from it on this part of the forum...as you peeps tend to.

BACKGROUND ON FILM:
India's first film shot on 24f High Def (same camera method used on Star Wars Ep 2) Vaanam Vasappadum by director/cinematographer P.C. Sriram. The film deals with the story of a rape victim and her victimisation after the tragic events.

If there is a director approved
HD version it should be used for
the DVD and not any film elements.
Where is official confirmation
that Khakee etc. prints came from
a HD master? I doubt it. And DI
is too expensive for the time
being.

HD at a few places was used (to rectify certain problem areas) to make theatrical film prints, not for DVD.

I think for Khakee DI was used to create the looks certain scenes( ex. doctor's flashback story) that can't be achieved by filters. Just because a certain scene was manipulated by converting film into a digital medium doesn't mean that Khakee's complete movie HD master sitting somewhere. And isn't DI done at a much higher resolution than 1080i. If the film is shot using the HD cameras, it'd be crazy not to create the dvd from the orginal hd master. Once upon a time in mexico and spy kids 2&3 were done this way.

So they will be doing it in the UK if they can get the HD master?

How about releasing a 1080i DVHS tape? That would be a first for an Indian movie.
