Hit films with a relatively new star cast
Lagaan: Aamir Khan was the only star in this Oscar-nominated film directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar. The rest of the cast comprised newcomer Gracy Singh and lesser known stars.

Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai : Directed by Satish Kaushik it was Tusshar’s debut film co-starring Kareena Kapoor who only had one release behind her.

Tum Bin: Anubhav Sinha’s directorial debut starring TV star Sandali Sinha, Himanshu Malik, Priyanshu Chatterjee and Rakesh was a love story with a difference.

Kasoor: Starring Aftab Shivdasani who had only one not-so-hot Mast and newcomer Lisa Ray, the film directed by Vikram Bhatt is the biggest grosser so far this year.

Raaz: This desi version of What Lies Beneath directed by Vikram Bhatt had Dino Morea who was reeling under the debacle of Pyar Mein Kabhi Kabhi and Bipasha Basu who had one Ajnabee.

Yeh Dil Ashiquana: Starring newcomer Jividha opposite Karan Nath, this Kuku Kohli directed film is a surprise hit.

Style: This N Chandra directed film starring newcomer Saahil and Riya Sen whose Love You Hamesha is consigned to the cans and Sharmaan Joshi who had one Godmother, brought in the youth with its feet-tapping music and with-it story.

Unconventional films that made it good
Monsoon Wedding: Making a song and dance about a wedding, this Mira Nair directed film starring Vasundhara Das, Parvez Dabbas. Naseeruddin Shah and Lillette Dubey was a hit with the Hindustani public.

Bollywood Calling: Nagesh Kukunoor’s third outing, the film starring Om Puri was a spoof on the Hindi film industry.

Chandni Bar: Written and directed by Madhur Bhandarkar, the film tracing the life of a bar girl had Tabu, Atul Kulkarni and Ananya Khare giving a terrific performance.

to an extent both... as we have seen in cases like k3g star pulls the crowds and the film is a superhit.... and ofcourse films like raaz and yeh dil aashiqana being the surprise hits of the year.. but i dont think either film had a great story.. raaz was inspired by what lies beneath... i think the timing of raaz when the audience was sick of patriotic thrillers and mushy family dramas, worked in its favour combined with good music and fresh faces. so stars, music, story, good publicity can all individually or together work in favour of a film...

the storyline has to win.

K3G was a blockbuster from the mention of all the star names but had the storyline been crap, it would have fizzled out much quicker.

I enjoyed both Raaz and YDA fo several reasons but the stars - relative newcomers - were irrelevant eye candy.:oh:

MKKH (eeks), Style, Raaz, Kasoor and Yeh Dil Aashiq... were they hits ? I think they all sucked. Are u saying box-office ringers ?

anyway, coming back to ur question...

I think it has gotta be a combination of both. But I vote for a good story and slick subsequent representation of the same to be major factors for a film's success.

Maine Pyar Kiya and QSQT being fine examples.

:)

It all depends who is watching the movie.

In India if you have movie shot around the world locations with good music it will be a hit in most cases. Whereas in the west the above is fine but a good performance from the actors with a good script will become a hit.

I would like to see a good thriller / suspense story from Bollywood and see how it does.

They dont know!! how to make it!! only one i would count in that category, well made will be GUPT!! i really enjoyed every thing abt that movie!! even a new comer boby deol, did not make any difference!!
Only they ar GOOD in making RUN OF THE MILL..CANDY FLOSS films, with wacky, houses sets, grandior star cast with stupid story and rECHURNED music!! for multi-CRORES!!!

I agree love stories have their own value and in that genre i believe Yash Chopra is the MASTER OF HIS ART!!I still think, DAAG, SILSILA , KABHI KABHI, DARR, CHANDANI LAMHE, FAASLE and even DTPH!! have their own status!! NO bodycan deal, subtle emotions, feelings with great impact and intesity, besides him!!( pls. add if i missed any of YR's INTENSE ones!!
one EXCEPTION was DDLJ made by his son!rest like MOHABTAEN< KKKG<KKHH etc!! I dont believe!! I am not IMPRESSED!
