Wasn't Mother India nominated in 1957? I think it lost the award by 1 point???

Mother India was nominated in 1957. Only other Indian film to be nominated before today, was Mira Nair's acclaimed directorial debut, Salaam Bombay.

What are Lagaan's chances? Is Amelie still the favourite?

No, Lagaan will probably not win since Amelie is a stronger contender but I have my fingers crossed!! Isn't it amazing!!!

Amelie is still the favourite and I think it has also been nominated in some of the mainstream categories too. But who knows, Lagaan may spring a surprise.

I personally think that Monsoon Wedding would certainly have been a much stronger contender at the Oscars. But take nothing away from Lagaan, it is a great film.

Can't believe this! can't believe this! can't believe this! I can't sleep anymore...not till the winners are announced!!:) Amelie will probably win - but Lagaan stands just that little chance - and who knows!
I think Lagaan deserves all the credit it's gotten - and I don't think MW would've been a better contender.

I believe Amelie will win(however hard I say to myself that kameene, you gotta say good things about Lagaan). But I hope Sony takes this opportunity to start publicising the movie and creates awareness about desi flicks.

THat would be the biggest thing. I am already hounding my local exhibitor to bring Lagaan back to the theatres. Plan to sell it to goras as THE OSCAR nomination.

It's been a great year for Indian films on the international scene:

1. Monsoon wedding wins Golden Lion at Venice
2. Lagaan nominated for European Academy Awards
3. Monsoon Wedding nominated for European Academy Awards
4. Monsoon Wedding nominated for Golden Globes
5. Lagaan wins Prix du Public at Locarno
6. Lagaan wins Norwegian Film Institute's award for Import
7. Monsoon... nominated at BAFTA
8. Maya gets runner up at Toronto
9. MW gets second runner up at Toronto
10. Lagaan invited to Sundance
And of course...
11. Lagaan nominated at the Oscars

Anyone else wanna add to that?

Nope! you've pretty much covered most of it up to date Aryan.
I am SOOOOOOOO happy today now that Lagaan has gotten an official Oscar Nomination for Best Foreign Film at the 74th Annual Academy Awards. I don't care if this film wins(which I doubt that it will), but getting an Oscar Nomination is more than enough if you ask me. A definate Triumph for Bollywood. Congratulations to Aamir Khan and the entire LAGAAN team. Can't wait to see AAMIR KHAN at the Oscar's, I'm getting my VCR ready for that day.

LAGAAN RULZS!!! :DD:

Guys,

Here's what I propose we should all do as afficianados of good Bollywood cinema.

Hound the local exhibitors to do more showings of the flick (I know Sony pictures will eventually release it), but the buzz has to be generated abhi se.

Take at least 10 firangs to see the movie.

What better way to pay tribute to one of our own than getting it maximum awareness. Whadja say people ?
