Very Special Thanks To Fred for these shots!

(Fred, Hope you dont mind :) )

Those screenshots are a little bit darker than it really appears when you're watching the movie.

The main flaw of this DVD is of course the absence of English subtitles. There's only french subtitles.
I'll make a complete review of this DVD if several persons want to know more. The review of the Eros edition is available here.

Is it PAL or NTSC? If it is the latter, is it progressive?

it's region 2, so i'm guessing it's PAL.

wow, what a beautiful dvd. too bad it's about $40 CDN.
from amazon.fr shipped to toronto, it'll be about $52 CDN. by any chance, has anyone see a pirate floating around the toronto area? :)

fred, where did you buy your copy from?

DVD Review for this edition:

http://www.dvdnet-fr.com/lire-test-dvd-394.html

Helps if you understand French  , but you can use http://www.freetranslation.com or a similar engine to get a better understanding of the review.

But the screenshots help, along with a 4/5 rating for PQ and some shots from the extras. I can't believe we didn't know of this version before.

Isn't it SECAM that they use in France?? No idea, what system it is in.

Is it Progressive??
Technically, all DVDs (so far) are interlaced. If done sensibly, original film frames can easily be weaved back together (we have been calling these as Progressive DVDs) even by DVD players costing just $ 50 US. (What we call Pseudo-progressive or Film to NTSC telecine, require expensive pixel by pixel comparing systems to sort out the original frames). If fields are averaged out, no system, however expensive, can get the original frames back.

Looing at the PQ of this edition, it must be what we call Progressive (original film frames recreatable).

Wasn't this edition released just a few weeks ago in January 2004??

For everyone :

This is a PAL (not SECAM - that was for VHS) region 2 DVD with an anamorphic image transfert. It has a Hindi 5.1 Dolby Digital track (along with a French 5.1 DD track) and only French subtitles are available, nothing else. All the bonus feature are also in French.

The DVD was released on January 22, 2004.

I did not find a website, other than European, that is selling this edition. So I think that the best way to get it is via Amazon.fr (it's 25,29 EURO so 30,97$ plus shipping cost). The thing is that this Edition is really for the French, so you have to buy it in France or on a French located Website. I know tons of them but the best for you (living in California or in Canada) is Amazon.fr

But if you want to I can do a complete review of this Diaphana Edition Préstige on my website. Since yesterday I received a lot of question about this DVD.

So if this DVD does come to Canada/US expect another PAL2NTSC transfer ala Asoka :x

Assuming Diaphana to be a reputable french DVD company, and it releases Devdas in NTSC, it will be a new Film to NTSC transfer, like all Hollywood films. They are almost never converted from NTSC to PAL for their PAL release. Only cheapos do that.
