I was reading up on D-VHS the other day. From what I gathered the picture and sound is stunning as it would be expected from a hi-definition format. But also this is only to target a niche market for home cinema enthusiasts who always are on the look-out for best in quality. D-VHS is only going to be a stop gap before the advent of HD-DVD – that’s where the mass consumer market is. But they are also people who think the studios like Fox, Universal and Dreamworks would prefer to release their films on D-VHS rather than HD-DVD or even DVD – although the studios themselves deny this. The reason being its easier for them for make linear tapes and it makes better economic sense too as they don’t have to deal with expensive cost of making DVDs and extras that go with it. Of course tapes don’t last as long either so there always a probable re-sell of the same product to the same customer.
I think newer Indian films done on either of the HD formats will look stunning; two notable ones being Lagaan and Mission Kashmir – only if done properly – but then again who ever has done a Indian film properly on any digital format (bar a few!).
I would like it when these studios design these new formats to include quality control mechanisms for every film released on a HD format; to have to achieve a certain level of proficient quality – or otherwise it cannot be released (Nintendo do this! ). Then people like Eros, YRF and Video Sound will never be able to release a Indian film on any HD format! I’m dreaming again
