Here's my take of Yash Chopra's first directorial effort,a classic on many fronts including subject, melodious soundtrack
and performances.
Dhool Ka Phool (1960): Mala Sinha,Rajendra Kumar,Nanda &
Ashok Kumar. Music: N.Datta,Produced by:B.R.Chopra
Good: 1) Movie is complete (running time appox 150 min's)
2) Transfer source used appears to be in good shape
for a movie nearly 42 years old,usual sparkles &
wear & tear in transfer source but still delivers a
decent transfer.
3) Some sharp/clear images,good details in many
scenes.Plays like a B/W movie.
4) English subtitles also on songs.
5) Interactive menu 20 chapters,8 songs.
Bad: 1) Awful soundtrack remastering,hissing & crackling
thruout. One of the worst sound remastering I have
ever heard. At times soundtrack sounds like one from
a bad VHS. No effort on YRF to correct flaws
on soundtrack.
2) No chapter information inside DVD box. Shame on
YRF for selling this disc for 20 bucks and not to
include chapter & songs info on the DVD box.
3) Extra lists Theatrical trailor this is totally false,
only extra is repeat interview with B.R.Chopra
from previous YRF DVD's.
4) Now get this YRF art department includes stills
of Mala Sinha & Ashok Kumar from Gumrah on back
cover of DVD box and on menu's of DVD. Probably
Yash thought still's of Ashok & Mala were from
Dhool Ka Phool.
Verdict: A decent DVD totally ruined by awful mastering of soundtrack which is one of the worst. At times crackling and hissing totally overwhelms the video. Can't recommend. Rent it if you want to watch this classic. It's a shame this is perhaps the only movie which had two silver jubilees one on its inital release and the second on it's re-release in 1975.
