Okay, so the Ultra DVD is too dark!
Best is Channel 4 (wish I was in The UK ;) ) and I'd love a recorded copy, if someone has one.

Which is an example of a perfect Black and White DVD? Like the contrast, brightness, shadow detail, highlights, sharpness, etc. are perfect?

It comes in a box set with "Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam". It has a couple of extras. I think "In Search Of Guru Dutt" too is included.

I too was wondering how come you zulmies did not realize about this release. Or I thought that it was discussed and I didn't come across the posts.

I don't know how I missed it - you have done me a great favour in pointing me to it! Two of the best movies in what looks like being a great transfer. I am excited to see them! I hate all of the DVDs of Pyaasa so far - I just hope it is the full version (the running time is making me worried).

BTW, as the reviews say, the audio is clear, but has distortion like hissing, crackling, etc.

And the video quality is not perfect. Its slightly dark and has splices, blemishes and quite a lot of wear & tear.

And there's really bad news for you...
These DVDs are in PAL format. So be prepared for the PAL speed up. :(

I can fix the pal speed up. So no issues there. I can see the wear and tear on the clips I saw online. But still it looks like it beats the other releases hands down!!! Thanks so much for posting about this. I never would have known!

Sure thing. I will post a review. It will take a few weeks for them to get to me from France.

Probably the ultra DVD is progressive. When I played the song 'Jane Kya Tune Kahi" parallel to the audio cd version, there's no speed difference. Plus I don't see any combing.

The print appears clear. No fuzziness seen.

But when I play 'Jane Woh Kaise Log The' parallel to the cd version, there is some difference. The audio starts lagging behing.

I'm confused! Help!

Mystery solved.
I tested this with the songs "Jane Kya Tune Kahi" and "Jane Woh Kaise Log The".

The disc most definitely has a speed shift (4%).

The reason I found no difference between the OST source and DVD source of "Jane Kya Tune Kahi" is because my OST version (From the album Classics' Revival : Pyar Hua Ikrar Hua) itself was running at a speed shift of 4%. The song in the CD is from a PAL sped up source.

However, I noticed speed shift when I was comparing "Jane Woh Kaise Log The" from the two sources (DVD and OST)

Is this how all DVDs look as well? Is the original negative
gone? Is the beauty of the film lost forever? That would
be a shame.

Let's be optimistic, Dreyer's Joan Of Arc was once found and competently restored, let's hope the same can happen to Dutt's Pyaasa as well in the future.
[color=#000000]Yes, it was found in an asylum. But that print had not
been screened much at all. Pyaasa's negative has been
used to strike hundreds of prints. Till this day original
negatives are used to strike all the prints!

Well, the restoration work was done by Ultra, and they have uploaded this.

I hope that's not meant to be an example of quality restoration. It's purple, so we're to believe Ultra doesn't know how to greyscale a black and white film? And it's 25fps, so we're to believe Ultra doesn't know what film framerate is? And judging by Ultra's past record, they'll cut off both the top and bottom so it can become 'widescreen', and then be colorized, and then be field-blended for release on NTSC DVD.
