Practical magic!

'So many tricks. We loved them'

Special Glasses for a special movie

We went to see the movie Chota Jadugar (directed by Jose Punnoose). We had to wear special glasses because it was a 3-D movie. When we wore the glasses, things in the movie looked as if they were coming out of the screen.

The story is about a boy named Indrajit (Suraj Balajee, who earlier made an appearance in Shah Rukh Khan's Asoka), who learns magic from his grandfather (singer-actor S P Balasubramaniam). His father does not want Indrajit to learn magic, and wants to take him to America to study further so that he can be proud of his son.

And though his grandfather is sad, he allows Indrajit to leave with his father.

When he comes to America, Indrajit realises he does not like the place. He misses his grandfather dearly. He then runs away from home and tries to call his grandfather. Sadly, he cannot, because three streetchildren snatch away his money.

Soon, he meets a dog that works for two thieves. This dog would actually rob people off their money and hide it in the woods.

The dog and Indrajit become good friends. Whenever Indrajit is hungry, the dog would fetch a little of the hidden money and feed him.

Meanwhile, Indrajit also becames friendly with the three streetchildren -- he saves one of them from the police with the help of magic.

Indrajit's father starts looking for him. They make announcements all over the television and inform the police.

By then, Indrajit gets in touch with his grandfather and tells him he has run off from home. The grandfather too comes to America to search for Indrajit.

Unfortunately, the two thieves kidnap Indrajit, his friends and the dog.

Will Indrajit and his friends be rescued?

We liked the movie a lot, mainly because it had many funny parts. Especially when they show Indrajit playing a lot of tricks on the servant.

We liked the 3-D effect where everything seems to be jumping out of the screen. We got scared only once, in the beginning. But later we kept getting fooled and reached out to the things that came out of the screen.

If you took off the glasses, the screen would appear hazy, so we had to wear the glasses all the time.

All of Indrajit's tricks were cool, and there were approximately six songs in the film. One of the songs had the sounds of dogs barking, along with Indrajit singing. So that was very cool, too.

*** BTW!! Did u GUYS see JAMES CAMERON, GHOSTS OF ABYSS(3D Venture) Previews..It looked AWESOME!!

Looking forward to ADD FIRST 3D DVD in my humble collection!! :baaa:

Dog days in Hollywood... And now in Bollywood

Animal actors set to steal the show in
Chota Jadugar, a 3D delight

he forthcoming summer special Chota Jadugar, a 3D film releasing in April, features 38 acting dogs who are all set to delight audiences along with child actor Suraj Balajee (of Asoka fame) and singer/actor SP Balasubramaniam. The lead dog, Barkley provided by Animal Actors Hollywood, was finalised after the director had auditioned sixteen dogs in Hollywood, provided by three major animal suppliers in Los Angeles. Barkley has worked as a lead dog in several Hollywood productions and is the best trained at Animal Actors. He was able to perform most of the actions in the script without prior training.

In this film, two other look-alike dogs, Pixie and Fletcher, who happen to be his siblings, were used as his doubles. The look-alike dogs are back-up dogs and were used to speed up production when Barkley was tired. This is a standard practice in US when dogs play lead roles in movies. Besides, Barkley, Animal Actors also provided two other dogs, Marcello - a poodle with whom Barkley is in love with, and Barnum, a boxer who is competing with Barkley for the poodle’s attention.

The film also features 38 other dogs that are acting as Barkley’s friends in the film. These dogs were supplied by Dawn Animals and Services, and All Creatures Great & Small, New York. These agencies ensured the ethics code prescribed by American Human Society are followed when animals are used for movie shooting.

What’s also interesting is that these animals had a whole different set of cues for them, like the ones for human actors like ‘Cut’, ‘Action’ etc. The above animals have featured in several Hollywood hits like American Beauty, Men In Black, Sheena Queen of Jungle, Naked Gun, Silence Of The Lambs, Waterworld, Baby’s Day Out, Home Alone - 2, Gremlins etc.

SCREEN calls it ENDEARING:

REVIEW | Chota Jadugar

Endearing

Chota Jadugar is about the foremost of every child’s fantasy—magic. The story revolves around a young boy, Indrajith who lives happily in Mayapuri with his grandfather Acharya, an acclaimed magician (S.P. Balasubramaniam).

His father, Krishna (Trilok Malik) based in America visits Mayapuri and decides it’s best for Indrajith to leave the small town and come with him. Heartbroken, Acharya tries to explain to Krishna that Indrajith has a rare talent for magic and can become a famous magician. But Krishna, who thinks of magic as a waste of time, takes Indrajith with him. Once in New York, Indrajith, who had lost his mother as an infant, realises that this father is living with another woman. Unable to digest this, he runs away from home.

On the street, he befriends three kids who have run away from an orphan shelter. They meet an adorable dog Raja who is hiding from his cruel masters; two street-smart thugs who would make him steal. Together, the foursome with help from Raja begin performing magic shows on the road and earn easy money. Raja’s ex-masters while looking for him encounter the four kids. Once they discover that Indrajith is the grandson of a famous magician, they kidnap him for a ransom. An interesting climax follows where Acharya and the four kids with the help of diligent canine friends defeat the kidnappers.

The plot is interesting enough but does not exploit the scope of a 3 D film fully. A story about magic could have had a lot more stunning 3 D visual trickery. The dubbing in Hindi, while mostly effective, falters at certain places. The music is above par.

Suraj Balajee (earlier seen in Asoka) as Indrajith is cute and a good actor. SP Balasubramaniam looks the part of the larger-than-life magician who is also a loving grandfather. The dog Barkley who has acted in several Hollywood films (American Beauty) is an absolute scene-stealer. With school exams over, the timing of the release is bound to work in the film’s favour.

Saw the film the other day. It is not a patch on Chotta Chetan and was rather boring actually. The film is not a children's film but rather a juvenile film with atrocious acting and pathetic comedy. As for the 3-D effects, they are good technically but seem very forced and not blended into the script. Also most of the 3-D effects are over in the first half hour of the film and nothing seems to have been saved for the end. One would expect that the best effects are kept towards the end and also that the effects are gradually increased throughout the film, but that is not the case.

Overall a big dissapointment. The producers seemed to have forgotten the most important thing, whihc is that the film has got to be good by itself and the 3-D is just an enhancement. It seems the producers thought that just the 3-D label was enough to rake in the moolah. They seem to have forgotten the fate of Shiva - 3D and the fact that Chotta Chetan was a nice entertaining film even without the 3-D, which only enhanced the enjoyment and experience.

Thanks to Arsh Miyan for the shots!

*** It looks from the shots that the EROS logo is colored, is this true Arsh? It was already annoying to have the logo there and now if they start coloring it it will be very annoying

Worth checking, if bluriness/ double images is part of 3D effect that one can get using 3D glasses??

If yes, wouldn't it be nice to view all the PAL to NTSC converted field averaged DVDs in 3D. LOL.
