There is a new Shemaroo Pakeezah? What are the differences?

The older version of Shemaroo Pakeezah was Field Averaged. The newer version is, what we call, 'Pseudo-progressive' or 'Film to NTSC telecine' (every 5th field is repeated field).

But the horrible noise reduction is the same?

... and aside from the noise reduction the print used is the same as the previous release (i.e. there are small jumps and the 'Mausam Hai Aashiqana' song is a cut and paste job where part of the picture is looped to account for missing footage!) Still waiting for a BEI or a BFI release (didn't someone say that BFI were going to release Pakeezah this year?)

WIth regards to Satyam Shivam Sunderam - are there any cuts in the Shemaroo version - or is this the full movie? I'm desperate to not watch my YRFs version of this movie again as there are lip synch problems towards the end of the DVD.

Shemaroo SSS is one of the better prints, similar to Subhash Ghai collection. It's Pseudo-prog.

It seems complete. I'll check it's run time and let you know. I didn't notice any cuts.

I recall from the 70s, when I saw this film in a local auditorium, the projectionist said, they were instructed to remove a lots of footage from the flood scenes. Even with the cuts, flood water sequence seemed too long and dragging. So, even if the DVD version has flood scenes trimmed, you won't notice any cuts. Can't say, if there are or arn't any cuts.

Shemaroo sent me a list of some 215 DVDs, which was supposed to be complete till then and included many titles that are not on their site yet. None of the titles you mentioned, except APD and Hera Pheri are in it. Unless PTHHT, Biwi#1, Kya Kehna and DHT were released in the last 5-6 days, I'll be skeptical of them being genuine Shemaroo.

I haven't seen Shemaroo APD or Hera Pheri. I have Super Digital old release Hera Pheri that is Progressive and I'm happy with that. The current VS version of Hera Pheri will be either Progressive or at the worst a Pseudo-prog. On the other hand, Shemaroo version for sure will have vibrant colors as normal with Shemaroo. It may be either field averaged or Pseudo-prog.

I remember that the censor banner at the beginning of Guide on the EROS DVD states that the movie is Widescreen. Can you let me know which company have issued the Widescreen version of the movie - and does anyone know if this movie was shot in Widescreen or is the widescreen version a matted version of the film?

It's a fantastic movie and one of my favourites so I would like to have a better version of it.

rana already posted earlier telling you that:

I haven't seen Shemaroo APD or Hera Pheri.

if you want to purchase them, i will get them for you. but they most likely woulld not be any better than the N.A. versions.

(3 more DVDs added Mar 27, 2003)

So far, marking “Enhanced for smooth viewing” does not relate to Pseudo-prog or Field Averaged encoding.
There may be some clues from Bombay Music Sticker, Date packaged, where bought, etc.

Here is the grouping of 20 or so Shemaroo DVDs that I have:

1)
Satyam Shivam, Sundaram
Mughl-e-Azam
Bobby
Sangam

Bought locally from retailer. Cheap. Bought late 2001- early 2002.
No inserts.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Rs 750
Pkd 5/2001
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = No

PQ:
SSS, MEA, Bobby are Pseudo-prog.
Sangam is field averaged.

2)
Shri 420
Prem Rog
Awara

Bought locally from retailer. Cheap. Bought late 2001- early 2002.
No inserts.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Rs 750
Pkd 6/2001
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = No

PQ:
All are field averaged.

3)
Paakeezah

Bought locally from retailer. Reg price. Bought late 2001- early 2002.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Rs 750
Pkd 5/2001
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = No

PQ:
Field averaged. (Arsh says his copy is Pseudo-Prog)
(Arsh's copy of Paakeezah seems to be different than mine. His copy has a sticker, mine does not. His copy is Pseudo-prog, mine is field averaged)

Update: Arsh's copy is a newer version with new encoding. Prefer Arsh's version.

4)
Bullet
Chor Chor

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought late 2002- early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Covered with BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Both field averaged.

5)
Kaajal
Afsana Pyar Ka

Bought Locally. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: NO.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Covered with BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker.
(Kaajal cover is not sharp??)
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Afsana Pyar Ka is Pseudo-Prog but very bad PQ.
Kaajal is Field Averaged.

6)
Saudagar
Tere Mere Sapne
Hero
Karma
Karz
Sadma
Ram Teri Ganga Maili

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Only TMS Covered with Shemaroo price sticker (instead of BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker). Pkd 1/2003 (Sadma Pkd 9/2002).
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes
All in this group without doubt, Indian Shemaroo.

PQ:
All Pseudo-Prog.

7)
Chhupa Rustam

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Pseudo-Prog.

8)
Jab Jab Phool Khile

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Only TMS Covered with Shemaroo price sticker (instead of BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker). Pkd 10/2002.
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Field Averaged

9)
(Arsh has Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na. Arsh will give further details. Arsh found it Field Averaged. )

Rana

Update on Mar 27, 2003.

Looks like the corelation is Date of encoding. Newer encodings are better. For example Paakeezah newer version is better. Similarly newly released Shemaroo DVDs are mostly Pseudo-prog and better PQ.

Rana

Adding info for another 15 Shemaroo DVDs:
(Bought directly from Shemaroo in India; Sept 2003)

Dharam Karam Pseudo-Prog
Mera Naam Joker Pseudo-Prog (Part 3 is Field Averaged)
Beta Pseudo-Prog
Chori Chori Chupke Chupke Pseudo-Prog
Hindustani Pseudo-Prog
Jewel Thief Pseudo-Prog
Waqt Pseudo-Prog
Yaadein Pseudo-Prog
(All Subhash Ghai collection is Pseudo-Prog)

Barsaat (Raj Kapoor) Field Averaged
Jaagte Raho Field Averaged
Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai Field Averaged
Kal Aaj Aur Kal Field Averaged
Shri 420 Field Averaged
The Great Gambler Field Averaged
Humraaz (Sunil Dutt) Field Averaged

Rana

Add:

Chhalia(Raj Kapoor) Field Averaged (Silver media as opposed to somewhat golgdish on other Shemaroo DVDs)

Ashanti Field Averaged

SHEMAROO CHHALIA

Silver media should not matter here as the DVD is Single Layer.

DVD is made from Film print CC 1980 showing 3075 meter in 14 reels. Perhaps that's all that was left of this classic by 1980. I'm sure the original release (1960) must have been around 4000 meters (18 reels).

My VHS copy comes from the same 1980 CC version.

The DVD is 1 Hr 55 min. VHS is somewhat longer.
In first 40 min that I checked, DVD is 7 min shorter. Small portions missing in DVD making the story and events somewhat less logical.

For example:
In VHS, as well as, in DVD I didn't notice Chhalia stealing Nutan's Wallet in Chhalia Mera Naam. Then, how does Chhalia know who to save from Suicide?? In VHS he chases Nutan all the way to and through Qutab Minaar to stop her from Suicide. In DVD the chase (suspense and Qutab Minaar) is missing. We just see that he stops Nutan from jumping, location un-identifiable.
