I do have PowerDVD, but, I have no idea how to capture in "force weave" mode (honestly, I don't even know what that is). What is "progressive," and how is it better than "non-progressive"? Thanks.

I right-clicked in my PowerDVD window and went to "configuration," then "video," then "advanced." I cannot, however, seem to find the options you specified (i.e., "force weave," or anything like that). What I see is the following: Two Tabs: one says "dual display mode," the other says "smart-deinterlacing mode." Under the former, I am unable to make any changes. Under the latter, I can either "check" or "un-check" "perform de-interlacing." Also, I can choose either "auto-select" (which is what I currently have selected) or "specify manually." With "specify manually," I get to choose "how to perform de-interlacing." My choices are, "based on bitstream flags," "based on bitstream analysis," and "always perform de-interlacing." Also, I have options regarding "de-interlacing algorithm." Here, I can select from "pixel adaptive," "median," and "bob." I hope you're able to work with this, I'm rather lost as to what all this means. Thanks a lot.

Lost?? I wish I was lost like this. I envy your Power DVD. :lol:
It must be more advanced/ latest version than mine.

Try choosing "based on bitstream flags," .
As there are no bit stream flags in interlaced or Pseudo-Prog DVDs, I think, you should see combing in non-Prog DVDs.

Force Weave: Join 2 TV fields as per bit stream flags. (1 Progressive frame 640x480 is obtained by combining 2 TV fields of 640x240).

I have the same DVD cover (Eros), but my version is "pseudo-widescreen" (cropped from the top and from the bottom). The print seems better than that of the shots you posted (of course, I can't compare the audio), but yours is likely presented in the original aspect ratio. It is possible, however, that the shots you posted may be from a further-cropped version of the Eros DVD, cropping from the sides, to, again, make the frame a square. This might be unlikely, though, as, again, the print of your shots looks different from that of the Eros DVD.

Most Eros DVDs have 5.1 surround audio, though for older titles this is just one mono track duplicated over five channels.

If you're talking genuine surround (i.e. different sounds coming out of each speaker), then you won't find that on any Hindi DVD of films made prior to the mid 90s since 5.1 surround wasn't used in Bollywood films until then. And since it's unlikely that any studios have kept the original audio stems from their films, no suitable sound material will have survived to be remastered and remixed to genuine 5.1 surround.

So any DVD of a pre-90s movie that is labelled Dolby Digital 5.1 will simply just be a case of mono/stereo spread over five channels.

BTW, was Ram Shastra the first film to release in 5.1 or was 1942 A Love Story?

Hi,

First post! This is a great forum. Lots of good info here!

I just wanted to add that I picked up a DVD of Zanjeer recently & it was in full screen. It wasn't remasted, but the quality was acceptable. Did Eros re-release the film in full screen?

It reminds me of hearing a conversation between a theatre manager and his friend in the 70s.
Quote:
Theatre Manager was saying of the re-run of a 50s film that the audio has been modernized and is new music based on the original tunes. They do this many a times.
In the 70s, most of the 40s and 50s music directors were still around and they must have been updating their music tracks for the re-issues of their films. Recall, in those days it was common to show old classics in theatres with big publicity and big re-release.

Also recall, a similar big re-release in modern days was Mughal-e-Azam where new music was used.

Good question and welcome to the forum. The amount of other sources I have seen except the DEI/Eros version are all full screen i.e Set Max

I too did not know there was a print (or prints) that were in 2.35:1. Seeing the DEI's AR does change (mostly 1.90:1; Sometimes 2.00:1; Sometimes 2.10.1) so it could be that DEI have remasted it to 2.35:1.

Just a wild guess!

sknath, admins, images are no longer available in the post made by sknath.
Meanwhile, am in the process of merging the various zanjeer dvd threads.

Look at the First 3 shots....

1.) Double images for the man in the hat

2.) Block making out Pran's face

3.) Same thing as 2.

For the dance sequence, notice how Bindu's hand's have completely disappeared in some shots and reappeared in the others !

"Zanjeer was inspired by two english movies" says a post here... one was "Death Rides A Horse"... which was the other?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Quite a few Prakash Mehra movies were available on DVD in India from BOMBINO. Recently, several Bombino titles have been re-released by MOSERBAER (moser baer).
Other than DEI-Eros and Eros editions, there are Zanjeer DVDs by Spark,Baba, Bombino, MoserBaer.
NOW, Zanjeer is also available from BIG HOME VIDEO! This one's 4x3 AR and appears to be uncropped. It has Dolby Digital 2.0 audio (448 kbps).
My copy of Zanjeer (released by Eros) is great, except for the top and bottom of the frame being cropped.
