OMG! I just finally got around to seeing the Priyamana Thozhi dvd from Ayngaran, and must say that it was a fabulous film!! As the promos went, it is a good solid entertainer with none of the masala ingredients that go into most indian films. And it doesn't try too hard to be hip and sassy like the new age films either... The story was pure old school, but the film actually managed to surprise me by going into the exact different direction than i hoped.
Essentially, the story is about two friends, Ashok (Madhavan) and Julie (Sree devi). The two remain lifelong friends and are very close to each other, yet they never EVER fall in love. Ashok's family find this concept difficult to believe at first but eventually accept this. Soon enough Ashok falls in love with Nandhini (Jyothika) and the two get married. Now here comes the surprising part - there really isn't any conflict between Nandhini and Julie. The wife accepts the two friends' relationship and they all are happy. Eventually some problems arise when Julie falls in love with another guy, and there are some cliched twists, but everyone ends up happily ever after. But the important part is that no, there is no fight ever between Madhavan and Jyothika, and there is no love ever between the two leads. This is a fairly different concept in Indian cinema, and I welcomed the fresh change. Also, there isn't really any overdramatic scenes one would see in most other movies (AHEM, BAGHBAAN), and there is no violence whatsoever. This is just a well made, old-fashioned tale that is a surefire entertainer.
The acting by all three main castmembers is very good. Madhavan acts really well and does pull of his some of his more dramatic scenes with ease (particularly the climax) while Jyothika just looks cute and doesn't become annoying. However the real actor among the trio is newcomer Sree Devi, who is just damn SPECTACULAR. The girl is just stunningly beautiful and gives a very subtle performance which easily steals the show from everyone else in the film. She has just beat out practically any other acting performance I've seen this year.
The DVD is also a pretty good one. Sure the ayngaran logo pops up again, but only for a few frames during the songs. As this is a drama, there is no real surround effects, but all channels do become active during the songs. The DTS soundtrack is nice and loud while the DD soundtrack is pretty good aswell. The video is pretty good for Ayngaran standards and is way better than Eros, Video Sound and most Yashraj films. I've noticed that the last few Ayngaran releases were quite grainy (such as Run, Nala Dayamanti and Anbesivam) but I didn't notice this problem in this movie. Overall, quite a pleasing transfer. The subs are bright and clear and easy to understand.
All in all, I must beg all of you to give this film a chance!! Trust me, if you like shit like Andaaz and Baghbaan then you will definately like this film. Get over the subtitles, and begin to appreciate a good well-made, well acted film. I may be enthusiastic cause I just saw this less than 20 mins ago, but wow, what a fantastic movie!!
Ok now this question is for Sunny, Urbanlegend and all South Indian movie fans, can you give me more information on this Sree Devi. I've heard she's in Kadhal Virus, but is she in any more movies and what is she doing right now? Are any of her films on DVD and how is the quality of those films? I've got quite a crush on her now from this movie, and now I must see her in more films!!! Thanks alot in advance!!
