I saw Lord of the Rings-The Two Towers last night on DVD. What a DVD!!

The Audio on this DVD is the best I have ever heard on DVD, it is definitely demo qualtiy. From the opening battle scene to the battle at Helm's Deep, where the bomb goes of my SVS PB2 Plus subwoofer was working overtime and made the movie sound amazing!!

I think I enjoyed the movie more at home than i did at the theater.

out!!!!!

I hear the disc is not as good as the Academy screener
you could download from the net. EE and lower bit rate,
less detail.
Also, the DNR problems of the prints are on the DVD as
well. The digital master is screwed up in that respect.
The HD version is on PPV this September. I'll record that
one instead.

I'm surprised! I read review from Home theater spot and they have give 4.5 stars out of 5. In general I have seen that they are very critical about the PQ and I agree with them most if the time.
According to the review it is not the reference quality but still excellent. EE is present but it is minimal.

I do read your reviews too on IMDB and I think you are a bit more critical than the spot. (which is always good thing  )

But this looks like total contradiction. Can actually see it and give us your opinion?

(I have alrady bought it. Can't wait for 4 disc version - I have not watched it yet though. )

Academy Screener DVDs are sent to the voting members of the Academy awards. These DVDs are barebones, no menus, just the movie -- often with a DD5.1 soundtrack if available. Every 10 or 15 minutes a subtitle pops up saying "For Your Consideration". The subtitle is actually part of the raw video, and cannot be removed.

People on the Home Theater Forum have done side by side comparision of the audio and video of the Academy Screener DVD and the retail DVD. Accordiing to them, the retail version is superior.

For the video, there seems to be a better black level throughout the film on the retail release. This allows for even further detail to be seen. It is the retail version and not the acedemy version that has a slightly higher bit rate in certain sequences.

For audio, the retail release has tighter and more controlled bass. The screener tends to get a little bloated and boomy.

Some other people that have seen the screener version of TTT say that screener dvd has both DD5.1 and DTS but the DTS has some bad popping sounds which makes in unlistenable.

out!!!!!!!!!!!

I have not seen the official disc myself so I can't know
for sure, but I have seen the Academy screener. This
screener has often close to reference quality image
quality, very little to no EE as well.
The official release on the other hand is described
by many at avsforum with front projection systems
as often very soft and with some EE.
I tend to be lieve that based on how the first part looked
on the first release and the longer version released later
(which was better).
I can't comment on the audio.
I'll probably buy the extended cut for the extra material
and stick to the HD version otherwise which will blow
the DVD versions away concerning picture quality.

I'm not saying the disc is bad, just not as good as the
screener concerning sharpness and lack of EE. But I
have not seen it so don't know for sure. See avsforum
for reports.

I found the LOTR TTT dvd PQ to be little soft during longshots. I don't know if this is intentional to blend CGI with original cinematography. Anyway the sound mix was awesome. Sean Astin's short film had really nice PQ.
