I had recorded Bombay Talkie (Shashi Kapoor; Ismail Merchant) 2 - 3 months back from TV, but never watched it. Actually I forgot.

Today I started watching it and the beginning of the program clearly states it to be a 'CRITERON COLLECTION; Widescreen Digital Transfer'.

I don't know if it refers to a DVD or Laser Disc or just a digital transfer for TV broadcasts. The TV broadcast was roughly 1.6:1 AR, which is not really widescreen. There must be a wide screen LD or DVD from Criterion Collection.

There was some talk about criterion releasing it but that has not been confirmed and it is not part of the next batch of criterion releases.

I guess, that explains it. It may not have been released for Home Video, it definitely has been preserved/ digitally transferred by Criterion. I taped it off TV. Start of the program clearly states, "CRITERON COLLECTION" and " Widescreen Digital Transfer" in big letters.

I e-mailed Criterion about this. Let's see what they say.

Yes. It is Criterion. DVD coming next year.
But, it is not in Criterion Collection.

Well, here is the reply from Criterion:

Dear Rana,

BOMBAY TALKIE will be released to DVD in the coming year, and Criterion will be participating in this release, but it will not be part of the collection.

Thanks,
JM

I have sent another enq to find what does it mean that Criterion will be participating, but it won't be in the Criterion collection.

I have also asked if Criterion will be involved in Shakespear Wallah and Householder DVD releases.

Rana

P.S.
What other films are from the same team??

Criterion has released a few movies on DVD, such as the Zatoichi movies, through its sister company Home Video Entertainment.

A lot of Merchant-Ivory films are now available on DVD and also at Netflix.

I had posted it one of the threads about a year back or so, about e-mail response from criterion.

In TV broadcasts of Ivory Merchant films, Criterion is in end credits. Criterion had said that they are participating in Ivory Merchant Film DVDs but these DVDs are not under 'Criterion Collection' category.

This is pure speculation but i think with the purchase of Home Vision by Image Inc. - these titles "might" make into the criterion collection oneday . Esp. given i think this one ( Bombay Talkie) appeared in the LD criterion collection - not 100 % sure though .

The screenshots look dark - but prob this is the best its ever going to appear , i am going to rent it one of these days .

Review of the disk

Boy, this is what you call a great transfer! I don't see any contrast boost, oversatured colors.. nothing! I would love if our authors meet these standards. Old movies should look like this!
