ARMAAN GOING TO CANNES!
Another Bollywood screening at festival!

After the global success of last year's Bollywood film Devdas, Eros International is set to show the screening of 'Armaan' (Desire), at this year's Cannes film festival on the 17 May 2003. Devdas was screened at last year's Cannes film festival and was the biggest hit of 2002, making a total worldwide collection of $40million. 'Armaan' is scriptwriter- turned- director Honey Irani's directorial debut, which stars Bollywood Legend Amitabh Bachchan, superstars Anil Kapoor, Preity Zinta and Gracy Singh.

Eros International is the largest distributors of Bollywood films and has been part of many events such as the BAFTAS and the Palm Springs Festival. They will be holding a pre-screening party for the event.

This family drama is set against the backdrop of a hospital owned by Philanthropist Dr Sinha (Amitabh Bachchan), who dreams of running a state of the art hospital - free from discrimination. Dr Akash (Anil Kapoor) is his son who is equally devoted to his profession as well as his father. However, Akash is later thrown into emotional turmoil after meeting Soniya (Preity Zinta) a rich arrogant young woman, who attempts to buy his love through a financial agreement. The unusual climax soars as Akash is torn between his love for fellow colleague Neha (Gracy Singh) and his duty towards fulfilling his father's dream. As the title suggests, 'Armaan' attempts to explore the complexity of human relationships as well as portraying individual desires and dreams.

Armaan, Bhoot, Now challa Jajantaram Mamantaram at Cannes

iDream Proudctions second venture Jajantaram Mamantaram (j2M2)is to be screened at Cannes Film Festival to be held in May 2003. The main purpose of screening J2M2 is to attract distributors and buyers worldwide. The film has been made at the cost of 10 crores and has 63 minutes of special effects. The story of J2M2 is similar to that of that of Indian legend of Bakasur as well as Swift's Gulliver's Travel. With the film industry going through its worse crisis, would J2M2 recover its cost? Sripal Morakia said that he hoped to recover 70% of its cost from the international market. As for India, he said J2M2 will be released in 122 theatres all over the country while the English version would be released down South and only one English print would be released for Mumbai and Dehli.

This is what India seems to be doing in recent years, they send the commercial films to Cannes, the Oscars, etc.

Sending commercial films is fine with me as long as they are worthy, like Lagaan and 1947 Earth. In fact India has almost always been sending commercial films to the Oscars - its just that many were southern commercial films and mainstream Hindi audiences may not have noticed.

Let me present an excerpt from The Hindu:
IT is the same story every time. Year after year, India sends one of its worst movies for a possible Oscar nomination in the foreign language category. This January, the Film Federation of India submitted Kamal Haasan's "Hey Ram". Its blurb - which will form part of the publicity campaign to try and catch the eye of the 5,000-odd voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - reads: "The Partition era events of India as seen through the eyes of the man who was commissioned to kill Mahatma Gandhi".

"Hey Ram" is far more uninspiring than this synopsis. Badly directed, poorly edited and unimaginatively crafted, it can well be a grand example of what narcissism is all about. If Kamal Hasan finds it almost impossible to let the camera turn away from him, his own acting appears so jaded and predictable that it seemed like the end of the road for one whom I still consider has the fire and range to produce magic.

It was this "Hey Ram" that the Federation deemed fit for Hollywood, completely ignoring at least half a dozen far better works that India produced last year.

What about, for instance, Buddhadeb Dasgupta's excellently visualised and splendidly narrated tale of "Uttara", which won him the Best Director's Award at Venice a few months ago.

I am not surprised that this did not go. After all, the Federation's earlier choices centred on annoyingly inferior movies like "Jeans", "Indian", "Guru" and "Kuruthipunal", despite the fact that much better stuff was available.
