Murali Nair's Film Selected For Cannes

Renowned filmmaker Murali Nair's latest Malayalam film Arimpara, is selected to be the Indian entry for the prestigious `Un Certain Regard Section` at the 56th Cannes International Film Festival this year; the only official entry from India, reports UNI.

Co-produced by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) with Murali Nair Productions, the film is based on well known writer O.V. Vijayan's celebrated short story, "The Wart".

It stars Nedumudi Venu, Sona Nair, Bhagyanath, Rajan Sithara, Bharathan Narakkal and others.

His Maranasimhasanam (Throne of Death) had won an award at Cannes, in 1999. His Pattiyude Divasam and Yudhavum Vyaparavum were also highly acclaimed.

Maranasimhasanam lampooned the World Bank and American aid to Third World countries by portraying the tragic plight of a farm labourer who is caught stealing coconuts and soon finds himself framed for murder and is sentenced to death. It won six international awards and was screened in more than 50 film festivals.

A geologist by profession, Murali Nair gave up a secure job in an oil rig to do a filmmaking course at the XIC, Mumbai. Later, he served as the asst. director to Pavan Kaul, Nandan Kudhiyadi and Mani Kaul.

His third film <>A Long Journey, premiered at Cannes in `96 in the short film competition section.

Harivillu Goes To Cannes

By Moviebuzz

Hats off to Suresh productions and D.Rama Naidu for making a non-commercial film Harivillu, which has been chosen for the avant-garde Cannes film festival on the French Riviera this May.

The film directed by Narsing Rao is about a cancer stricken child who is in search of what death means to him. Those who have seen a sneak preview of the film say that it can create an awareness of Telugu films at the Cannes.

Harivillu is scheduled to have commercial release in April. The film stars Master Sudhakar, Bhanu Chandar and Ravali. The film augurs well for Telugu cinema and may also start a boom in quality art house production from Hyderabad. Last year Manjula's Show hogged all the limelight at festivals and let us hope Harivillu does the same.
