'Koi Mil Gaya, India's first sci-fi film'

January 23, 2003 16:13 IST

Cinematographer Ravi K Chandran is working on Rakesh Roshan's Koi Mil Gaya, starring Hrithik Roshan and Preity Zinta.

Not many people are aware of what the film is all about -- the director has guarded the film's theme closely, preferring to go about his work than entertain publicity for it.

Here, Ravi Chandran tells Shobha Warrier what it was like working on this big budget film and about the other biggie he is working on: Shankar's fun movie Boys:

at least the first movie to show space ships and aliens if not the first sci-fi movie.....anybody here remember a movie called ANANT-YATRA directed by Nachiket & Jayu Patwardhan starring Naseeruddin Shah, Anuradha Patel, Rohini Hattangadi? That to my mind was an interesting experiment in bringing sci-fi to the indian screen thought it was more of the fantasy mould with hardly any special effects...but the story itself was nice....i do hope Roshan Sr. does not mindlessly ape the Western film's effects with a weak story.....time will tell i guess....

If i am not mistaken, the storyline resembles an adult version of E.T (i.e adults essaying the roles of the Kids in E.T) :D

How can you guys take Rakesh Roshan's movie seriously at all?! From the looks of Koyla and Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai. That guy is semi-retarded! He has no consistency, quality, originality, whatsoever technically, aesthetically and artistically. He makes films only Indians could ever watch...

Semi-retarded might be the best way to describe HRITIK's character in KOI MIL GAYA. He is supposed to play a "semi-retarded" boy who becomes extra-ordinary after his meeting with an extra-terrestrial . Let's see how INDIA's first true SCI-FI film fares. Incidentally REKHA plays his mother who starred opposite PAPA RAKESH in KHOON BHARI MAANG.

Roshan might not be a great director, that's true.

But a few of his flicks have been quite enjoyable.
Khudgarz was a very, very, very good debut. Khoon Bhari Maang an enjoyable follow-up. Khel, one of India's best ever (and most under-rated), inspired comedies. And Karan Arjun had style and entertainment value.

Of late, his flicks have stunk (Koyla and KNPH), but I'm hoping it's just a mid-life crisis he's been going through. :hmm:

At least, the director of photography is good this time, he didn't settle for Kabir Lal thankfully.
