"Khushi" And All New Releases Flop

Like the films being produced, everything in the industry has been lethargic moving at snail´s pace. With the end of World Cup Cricket nearing, people expect this to change - yet- many are still not sure of the outcome. With that, this week´s box office is quite unrefreshing, let alone, unsurprising. Films continued to flop badly, and the one film that showed signs of hope, Boney Kapoor´s Khushi, came tumbling down flopping like no other. But there were mildly good things regarding old releases. Jism, which is the only successful movie of 2003, crossed the 10 crore barrier in India
and recalling its low budget of around 3.5 crores, its success is beyond doubt. Mani Ratnam´s Saathiya continues its good collections especially in Mumbai even in its 11th week. Kucch To Hai can be called successful but only in Mumbai and suburbs and parts of UP. Here are the details on recent releases:


Indian Babu

Banking on Nadeem Shravan´s music and an NRI theme, the film failed to get a good initial. The collections were just about OK but as the week came to an end even the faint glimmer of hope vanished and the collections crashed.
The overall verdict on this one is that, even though the movie was reasonable in the interiors of UP and Bihar, during
the first few days, in the metros the collections were between
20-30%, and thus the film has no chance at the box office.

Dhund- The Fog

The verdict is loud and clear! Not every film dealing with horror or suspense will succeed. It has met its predicted fate, that of a a flop.

Khushi

After four reasonable weeks, the movie has dropped sharply in its fifth week. The price/budget of 17 crores turned out to be the biggest enemy for Khushi, especially since out of which, 2 crores were spent only on one song!! The total all India gross is approximately 9.2 crores. The overall verdict on this one is that, if it were a 10-12 crore film, the B.O. fate could have been reasonable. Boney Kapoor stands to lose around 3 crore, which should make him
happy as the initial projected figure was 9-10 cr. But in the end, the film has flopped.

If the movie with attendance like Khushi doesn't recover its cost, they should look at the costs. Remunerations for artistes etc. Collecting Rs 14 crores is all you can squeeze out of the audiences.

How much are video and music rights? Surely that helped to cushion the blow of a lack of a box-office recouperation.

I don't know why do they declare every movie a flop?? I don't think they tell the truth.

For example:
We all had been given the impression that all Dev Annand produced movies have been flops since Des Pasdes. About 10 or 20 of them, in a row. Dev Annand was asked about it, why he keeps on making money losers. Dev contradicted. He stated his movies have not been losers. Distributors may not have recovered all their costs initially, but few years down the road, all tell him that they made enough profits from each and every film of his.

My apologies to you and DEV SAHAB!! Pls. watch LOVE IN TIME SQUARE and then tell me, What that CRAPPY DEV is churning these days etc!! I kinda didnot feel even to talk about it!!

It is PITTIFUL to see DEVANAND of GUIDE and DEV today and his PRODUCTS!! yaar excuse me for this, with due apologies to GOOD OLD DEVANAND too...

I have SEEN many CRAPS, but NOTHING like it! Lately!! :nopity:

That's my point.

Even a crappy product like this won't be a money loser in the end. If that was the case why do the same distributors buy his movies again? In this context, Dev said that eventually they do recover their cost, even from crappy movies, even from flops.

I just watched Khushi last night and my reaction after watching the film was that it deserved to flop. I failed to understand why Bollywood keeps harping about their movies flopping and they keep looking for excuses as to why their films don't do well. If you ask me the reason why Hindi films are no longer doing well is quite simply the lack of quality. Hindi films are going from bad to worse. The stories are cliched and repetitive. The treatment is loud and, crude and vulgar. The music is at best mediocre and the songs are nothing but impediments in the flow of the film. The acting is also very poor, with mostly relatives of yesteryear stars getting opportunities. To sum up, Hindid films are getting more than they deserve, because quite honestly the vast majority of the films being made don't even deserve a release, let alone success.

I second what Sanjay said. Not only are most of these films mindless, but they're not even mindless in a fun way. I hope this rut sparks filmmakers and producers to start taking risks. Not risks as in, "let's throw 70 crores at this film," but digressing from the old formulas and limiting the number of remakes.

Recall, Ram Lila remakes. By the hundreds of thousands every year and packed. (I don't know of now, but 30 yrs ago or so when I left India, Annual Ram Lila for 10 days, every year, in every community, and house full.)
