"Bollywood Hollywood" At The Genie Awards

Bollywood/Hollywood may not have met with overwhelming critical success but the film has done some roaring business abroad. Recently the zingy comedy crossed the 1 million dollar mark in Canada alone. And now it has recieved multiple nominations for The Genie Awards.

The film, by critically acclaimed director Deepa Mehta (Fire, Earth) features non-mainstream actors Rahul Khanna and Lisa Ray and an accloade of film supporting stars.

The most notable thing about the film was the director´s drastic change of genre. After the intense dramas that were Fire and 1947 Earth, not to mention the unreleased controversial Water, Bollywood/Hollywood came as a surprise to many. A parody at both Bollywood drama and Hollywood drama was certainly not what critics expected from Mehta. Nevertheless the film has been appreciated.

Nominations include best film, best supporting actor (Ranjit Choudary), and two nods for best supporting actress (Mousimi Chatterji and the Late Dina Pathak).

The Genie´s are Canada´s equivalent to the Oscar and Golden Globes and will air live on Feburary 13th 2003 from Toronto. We wish the cast and crew the best of luck at the awards!

The film I found was nothing special, although lots of non-desis were coming to watch it. It was however a very creative spoof of indian movies and it was fun to watch.

Dina Pathak deserves that award, unfortunately she passed away, making Bolly/Holly her last film.

While I would be happy if Bollywood Hollywood won best picture, it would reduce the amount of respect I have for these Genie Awards simply because I didn't think it was anything too great!

Check out the following link and connections to see what other films are in the running for the Genies and where can you see them.

http://www.genieawards.ca/genie23/screeningstor.cfm

Genie nominated films will be screened, for public, in Toronto, Nancouver, Montreal and Ottawa starting Jan 31st.

Competition is tough. BWHW-DeepaMehta is up against biggies like Ararat-AtomEgoyan, Suddenly Naked, Rare Birds etc.

I was away when the time came for Genie Awards. I was wondering when will they be ON.

Obviously they are long over and looks like Bollywood Hollywood didn't get any recognition.

At the website of an arthouse theater here in Dallas, they list Bollywood Hollywood in the Coming Soon section. So perhaps iDream is releasing this in other Non-Indian theaters.

(and they're having a Kurosawa retrospective too. Yay!)

This implies that the basis was good but execution could have been better. Hopefully, DM makes enough money from this movie to make her next movie on a bigger scale.

But the accent was natural. Comic or not, this is what it will be for this character. The same goes for Dina Pathak's behavior.
