Though I don't necessary agree with the writer, I do think Lagaan deserved an Oscar...

"I don't know why we should lick the ar-s of these white men and beg for an Oscar, and have a biased approach towards our own awards!" - Mahesh Bhatt

Mahesh Bhatt = Idiot No 1!!! I remember him saying on TV that we should have more kissing & sex in our films, so they'd be like american and european films and we'll be able to 'branch out' into the western markets. What a hypocrite! This guy will say anything to keep his name up.

I'll agree with Aamir Khan.
"It is a sign that Indian cinema has come of age worldwide and that it is loved and respected enough to be considered by the Academy Awards! - Aamir Khan

One bit I found funny in the article was "But our Devdas, with its fair skinned stars, was surely no different from an English epic?"...hmmm there were 2 fair skinned stars and they were not the main star...SRK who is DARK! When will they get over their colour mentality!

Can't they just accept Devdas was not all that great? That it was over-hyped even by Indian standards? That it won't appeal to the world?

"It was Aamir Khan with his Lagaan who first put in his little toe in the tinsel doorway leading to the starry palladium of the American Academy". Actually I'm sure Mother India was up for an oscar before Lagaan.

I have to say I think this writer is a bit of a bonehead.

He doesn't consider what a great achievement it was for LAGAAN to win the nomination itself- it was one of only 5 films from all around the world selected! I, for one, liked DEVDAS quite a bit, but it was not as solid and well made as LAGAAN, and it's emotions felt only skin deep.

And anybody who says Sidney Poitier won his Oscar only as affirmative action loses any credibility with me. Has he actually seen any Poitier performances? ???

That was one of the worst articles I've ever read. It makes me wonder whether he's even seen any of the other films up for the Oscar (or for that matter, other ones considered for a nomination like Devdas). He's basically taking the middle-ground between both quotes. He wants to feel proud of Indian cinema becoming known in Western entertainment, but if he doesn't get his way, he wails as if there was some injustice done. It's like he can't even accept the fact that Devdas was not that great of a movie (aside from its songs/dances).

Pagalchand, I guess the writer wasnt born when Sidney got his award for "Lilles of the field ( ? ) " or gave that powerhouse of a performance in "To Sir With Love" ( a movie that remains one of my most cherished film till todate.... no one could have given such a performance, sans Sidney Poitier)..

I was wondering Pagalachand do you have any info abt the sequel to this film ? I think this was a made for TV movie.. in which he reprised the role but the school was in Chicago, it was shown on CBS ?
