I recently read that Shemaroo DVD company and Subhash Ghai had made a deal in which the company was going to come out with 7 titles of Ghai's films (Saudagar, Karz, Karma, etc.). Apparantly the first, Saudagar is now OUT at indiaweekly and it says "With Making of" on the cover....my question is how good are these Shemaroo people? Are they as bad as Apollo or worse or better? I have never had the (mis)fortune of buying from this company and while the Ghai movies generally suck these days, some of his ones from the 80s like Hero and Karz are pretty good. Wouldn't mind them if they were half decent and had some info./interview with Ghai/actors like this one claims to have.

On a side note I guess the ones Ghai didn't produce independantly under Mukta Arts are with Eros since they released Vidhaata (Gulshan Rai produced that) and Ram Lakhan (Suneha Arts, or Ghai's brother's company), but pray what are Khalnayak and Taal doing on the Eros label since they were Ghai's movies unless Ghai has only made a deal for 7 titles, does he even have 7 to give to Shemaroo I only count 4:

Saudagar
Hero
Karz
Karma

Kalicharan has been released by WEG and was produced by someone else.

Yaadein was more close to 1.8:1 on the Tips DVD. Shemaroo are masters at cropping and mono to false 5.1 audio so don't expect much from these DVDs.

Hey guys,

I was interested in the buying this DVD from Indiaweekly, they sent me an e--mail saying they had it there for $12.99.
But since its SHEMAROO, I am not sure how its' going to be. Anyone have this DVD, could u tell me how it looks like, or post some Screenshots.
Thanks,
Haroon. :nervous:

Saudagar DVD from Shemaroo is 1.85:1 cropped, non-anamorphic. Soft, blurry picture - more so than normal films (probably half due to the age of the film). Colours are decent, poor sharpness for a DVD and interlaced. Sound is false 5.1, mono panned to all channels :ffs:

Screen shots later on (after the cricket :tounge: )

Ali, could the "Soft, blurry picture " be a result of Fields Averaging? Most of Shemaroo DVDs are field averaged, which could also be due to Film to PAL to NTSC series of transfers. I think, field averaging is the reason for missing limbs in screen caps of fast moving scenes.

Shemaroo's Bobby and Satyam Shivam Sundram are not field averaged and are Pseudo-progressive.

I wonder if someone could post screen shots from either of these two films using Force Weave and selecting those shots that don't have combing. As you know, in Pseudo-progressive material, half the screen caps have combing and the other half don't, when using Force Weave in Power DVD.

Perhaps, these screen caps will show the PQ to be as good as DEI's.

In that case, another request , Arsh.

Post some screen shots from DEI DVD for comparison as well. Better if you can compare it with a DEI DVD which may have a similar PQ, if comparable.

Whilst the DVD could be better, I think this is decent enough. Seeing as the best prints I've seen so far of the older Subhash Ghai movies have been the ones shown on Sony, these DVDs do give at least a decent amount of quality to some class movies.

And it could be worse.........Saudagar was originally released by GVI on VHS in the UK!
