Speaking at a seminar on film piracy organised over the weekend by director Subhash Ghai's film company Mukta Arts, Komal Nahata, called for an end to the current tug-of-war between film producers and exhibitors. He urged them to sit across the table and chalk out a commonly accepted time period for sale of DVDs and VCDs.

Pointing out that in the West, the sale of DVDs earned more revenue than theatrical releases, he said the current non-cooperative attitude of distributors and exhibitors over sale of DVDs and VCDs has indirectly helped in boosting film piracy in the country.


Kunal Das Gupta:
According to Kunal Das Gupta from Sony TV, producers also need to study the option of films made for non-theatrical releases. "We also need to look into the option of making films solely for home video or television," he said.

The only way for them to beat piracy is to set up great releases dates for the DVD's, in a few simple steps:
3 days, 5 days, 7 days, 10 days, 14 days, or 3 weeks after the film released. All those big films that wait three months to release a DVD are out of luck. Just going by simple plans makes everything better.

Don't producers confirm who gets the video rights and the release dates before the film is released in theaters? Or are they that disorganized?
