CNN reported that OSCARS will be broadcast in High Def this time. Enjoy.

Any idea when Filmfare or any such programs will be telecast in High Def. I don't expect them this year, but what is the time lag till India catches up with the world?? I would guess 8 yrs. With so much Computer tech in India, the time lag shouldn't be more than a year. Only thing is willingness.

480P or 540P doesn't qualify as HD. Moreover, CNN reported that Oscars to be telecast in High Def this year will be the first time.
A few movies are also telecast in HD.

BTW, Arsh, as you have HDTV, have you considered DVHS player and renting HD-VHS Hollywood movies??

Arsh and Ranaji,
I used to have HD cable. I get rid of it, as TIME WARNER was not providing enough programs to justify the price.
Times like this I miss the HD.

I seriously doubt that we will be seeing HDTV in India anytime in the near future. In fact I would be almost willing to bet my money that HDTV will not happen in India atleast for another 10 to 15 yrs and even that may actually be an optimistic time frame. As for digital broadcasting, that we should be seeing much sooner and in fact as far as sattelite tv is concerned it is already mostly in Digital. If someone were to ask me India is much better off without Digital, simply for the reason that Digital done poorly is much worse than analog and with greedy Indian companies what can you expect but for them to squeeze in more channels in the same bandwith at the cost of quality.

Arsh,
No, I can't put a rooftop Antenna as I live in a rental property. And there in not much local HD programs available as of now, except the occasional ball games.

A few? Many!!

This is the program of this week. Many big films are on
HD 1-2 years after the premiere. Right now you can see
"A Beautiful Mind", "Harry Potter 1", "The Others",
"Ocean's Eleven"... LOTR was on HD etc. etc.
The quality is GORGEOUS! And with the right equipment
you can tape it without quality loss. I have stopped buying
DVDs of major Hollywood films. The HD blows them away and
I can wait.

You are right Michel. There are many movies telecast in HD. But the percetage of movies telecast in HD is still less than 0.1% of all the telecast films.

As Sanjay mentioned, in India signal distributors would rather want to distribute more regular channels instead of one HD channel for the same bandwidth. Actually that is not unique to India. The same is here in North America as well.

Yes, but a minority of films is affected. Most are ~16:9
anyway and many others are Super 35 and presented open
matte with more picture on top and bottom.

I don't know about percentages but since it started there
must have been between 1000 and 2000 films (including
documentaries etc.) aired in true HD quality. That's a lot.

Wow. I didn't know there were that many. Its very good news.

Its time to get HD set-up.

BTW, I assume all these (more than 1000) film bradcasts were High Def transfers as well. Not that they broadcast a Progressive DVD quality (480P or 576P) up-converted to 1080i ??

How many HD DVHS tapes are avail?? Here in Canada they cost aprox $35 - $40 as compared to aprox $25 for Hollywood DVDs.

I don't know how many were Upcons and how many real HD,
but there are at least a few hundred real HD.
There are not many tapes to buy yet (~30-40). The rest
is only for people who live in HD land and can tape
themselves or have a friend that tapes for them. The masses
outside of HD land (USA, Japan...) have to wait for HD-DVD
till many titles become available to them (which can take
anywhere from 1-5 years from now). Europe is in the
stoneage concerning HD, EC or no EC, and no remedy in sight.

There are only 2 major HD movie channels (HBO and Showtime) in our area.
Most/All HBO HD movies are in real HD, not up converts like Showtime but again HBO show all their movies in 1.85:1(crapping is evident for some titles).
Where as most of the Showtime movies are up converts but in their OAR.
