DEVDAS, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, India
There's no more colorful introduction to Bollywood than this all-singing, all-dancing, all-fired spectacle. The plot, based on a 1917 novel, is good-old family-values propaganda: rich boy (all-world charmer Shahrukh Khan) leaves home, abandons girl friend (former Miss World Aishwarya Rai), dallies with prostitute (worldly-wise Madhuri Dixit), suffers nobly. It's played with such commitment that the tritest plot twists seem worth believing — and singing about, in nine nifty production numbers. Beyond that, Devdas is a visual ravishment, with huge sets, fabulous frocks and beautiful people to fill them; it has a grandeur the old Hollywood moguls would have loved.

This is to be expected from Richard Corliss, who is an avid foreign film watcher. The first list, by Schnikel, also lists 'Monsoon Wedding', which I thought was very unrepresentative of Indian culture in general and to put it plainly, just a really bad movie.

Still, its praiseworthy that a critic who seems so all-American as to include 'The Quiet American' and 'Gangs of New York' in his Top 10 list, also included 'Devdas'.

However, you can't really call this list a list of Top Ten Movies of 2002, because two of the films there are actually documentaries/short-films, in particular 'Bowling for Columbine' and 'Russian Ark' which has been getting coverage on PBS. They are not motion pictures in the traditional sense. By that standard, the list is senseless.

i would argue otherwise. on your point regarding documentaries, isn't the world changing? isn't that why acclaimed documentaries like Bowling For Columbine can become huge box-office successes...also i want to add that i just came back from gangs of new york - and i loved it! so, i would also have put the movie on my top of the year lists!

btw i agree with you regarding monsoon wedding :)

No, there are TWO best-of lists on that page, each listing his own personal Top 10s for the year. The only worst one on that page is 'The Hours'.

By the way, yes, 'Bowling' is a very timely piece I think, but I suppose they should either categorize what theyre going to award or refrain from making up some cockamamie list like this. If you've even heard of 'Russian Ark' you'll probably take issue with its inclusion here. Its a long 'experimental' film. Belongs more in the Maya Deyer catalog.

For example, if I was to make my own Top Ten list and then place 'Titanic' and an episode of 'Colgate Antakshari' in the same Top 10, it would look very silly, wouldn't it?

Are u sure because,
the topic of the listning is the best + WORST.
so the first list may be the best and the second one worst.

Read the description of the movie; doesn't seem like he talks about enough negative points to be on the worst list.

And that list also contains Gangs of NY, LOTR, and Minority Report which I doubt are on the worst list.

There are two lists by two different people,as pointed out by Kabir. The list (second one) by Richard Corliss has Devdas on number 4 position. The first list by Richard Schickel has Monsoon Wedding on number 5.

Personally, I thought Monsoon Wedding was way much better film than Devdas. Shorter film, more drama.

Strange how the west seems to prefer over-the-top melodramatic films - i mean i don't mind them...but i don't expect them to like it either.

Its good to see it getting international recognition, like in Time magazine, but to be honest it still has quite a means to go before it becomes a large contender for best foreign film.

Golden globe award nominees were recently announced and no sign of Devdas among the best foreign film nominees.

Going slightly off topic (as I always do) I saw the Bengali version of Devdas, starring Soumitra in the title role with Uttam Kumar playing Chunilal. And sure, it was not as technically well made as SLB's version, and there wasn't as much gloss. But it was so much better!!! A lot more was explained about the main story here. It had glimpses into Chunilal's past, rather than just having him as a character who is needed to make Devdas into an alcoholic. It was only after watching this version that I realised how bad the new version is.

It was a VHS - I think all the Bengali movies relelased on DVd that I know of have already been mentioned on Zulm.

Just saw Deepa Gahlot's pick of best and worst actors of 2002:

Shah Rukh Khan [Devdas]

Well, somebody's got to say that the emperor's wearing no clothes. Shah Rukh Khan was a disastrous Devdas.

He stumbled, stuttered and hammed his way through the role, making Devdas look like a spoilt collegian who couldn't get tickets to a rock concert.

Devdas as a character was a wimp, but he had gravity, sensitivity and simmering rage that totally escaped Khan's performance.

Devdas tops another film critics top 10 list. The Charlotte Observer Film Critic

btw, Deepa Gahlot's selection carries no real value, she also hated films like Satya & Company and such reasons explain why she tought Vivek Oberoi was superior in Road than in Company.

its on those list because its the only movie which got the chance to go international with oscar nomination from India and the exposure it got in film festivals especially Cannes. There should be far better movies made in INdia than Devdas, they should look into regional films.
