Sanjay Gupta, director of Hindi movie 'Kaante', was seriously injured today after his car rammed into a pole on the Mumbai-Pune highway between Panvel and Lonavala, family sources said.
He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital here and his condition is reported to be critical. He has been kept under observation for the next 24 hours, the sources said

Gupta's eight ribs are broken, left arm smashed and there was continuous flow of blood from abdomen, the sources said adding the accident occurred when his car was moving at a speed of 80 to 90 kms per hour on the express highway.

Gupta was returning to Mumbai from Khandala when the accident occurred. A number of film personalities visited the hospital to inquire about his condition.

This is sad news, specially considering I just got back from watching Kaante with a new found respect (maybe I am overstating here) for him as a director.

Thats really sad. The Bombay Poona highway seems to be a dangerous one knowing so many people have met with tragic accidents. Hope Sanjay Gupta recovers.

A little good news, the latest is that Sanjay Gupta is now in a stable condition, although he should be out of action for quite a while. Atleast his life is out of immediate danger.

The condition of Sanjay Gupta continues to remain critical. The director of KAANTE met with a serious accident in Khandala on Friday afternoon and was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, Bandra. Though he was operated upon in the night, his condition continues to remain critical.

When this writer spoke to Dharam Oberoi, Gupta's associate, and Milap Zaveri (writer of KAANTE) on Saturday, 1 p.m. IST, he was informed that Gupta's wind pipe had been badly ruptured and 8 ribs fractured. He also sustained injuries on his shoulder and arm and there was a lot of internal bleeding, they stated. The doctors attending on Gupta have kept him under close observation for the next 72 hours.

Meanwhile, Gupta's dearest buddy, actor Sanjay Dutt, is flying back from South Africa today (Saturday) to be with him and his family at this crucial hour. He is expected in Mumbai on Sunday.
