--(ali, this definetely is new news...so leave it up :) )--

'Devdas' has been formally introduced to the Academy Award Committee over the last few days through industry ads in Hollywood and in 'Variety' Magazine, the American film industry's leading trade publication.

INSIDER ALERT : Aishwarya Rai, who plays Parvati, in 'Devdas' has been formally inducted into the list of nominees for 'Best Actress' at the 2003 Academy Awards. There were many deciding factors for this, but it has been decided that Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit will not have their names submitted for nomination in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories. Oscar Nomination Ads for Aishwarya Rai will be released first in 'Variety' over the course of December.

In the meantime, 'Devdas' has also been formally selected for possible nomination in the following categories :

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
BEST ART DIRECTION
BEST FOREIGN FILM
BEST FILM
BEST MAKE-UP
BEST COSTUME DESIGN

The posters announcing nomination in a limited number of categories are already on release.

In addition, there are already posters up on Ebay about Devdas at the Oscars. They can be found at:

--india will win its first oscar this time! - but i really hope it is for best foreign film! (other categories, atleast 1 is almost guaranteed!)

It's probably the agency SLB hired for the promotion of the film..no need to jump to conclusions ???

I always wondered if Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker had done the same thing with Lagaan -- by submitting it for more than just foreign film?....

But in regards to Devdas, I highly doubt whether it could pull off Best Actress or Film. The art design, costuming, make-up, etc., has a chance of being nominated though considering that an equally as colorful movie, Moulin Rouge, was nominated in such categories. And I'd like to think Devdas would have an added benefit, being a foreign flick for those categories.

Depends, which print do they show to the academy. With good Film print, it may get somewhere, but with the kind of Film print I saw, it will definitely win the "Worst Presentation" category. If this category doesn't exist, they might make one.

It wouldn't be too bad if this film gets nominated for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography & Best Costume Design(though I have no hopes that it will). Under these three categories, Devdas was extremely vivid and its some of the main reasons why this film appealed to me alot.

I can understand costumes, but the cinematography wasn't great IMO, and the art direction was merely grandiose. It was grandiose without any particular direction as to mood, place, etc. There was little differentiation between the opulence of Devdas' house, the opulence of Paro's house, and the opulence of where Chandramukhi danced. It all looked the same to me. There's no chance in hell of Devdas being nominated for Best Film.

Someone said that it all depended on what print of the film was shown to the Academy. As you know, the Academy is made of hundreds of people and the way they see these movies is when the Academy mails out tapes or DVDs to the members months before the noms are to be announced. Considering that most members will watch the film AT HOME, it is easy to speculate that the version they will be watching will be the EROS version. Poor things.

Unless of course SLB wakes up and realizes how his Devdas looks on DVD. By the way, did anyone notice how on the black box of Devdas, there is the actual signature replica of SLB? I wonder if he knows they've done this. Such 'director-approved' DVDs are usually put out only on special editions by companies such as Criterion, but if EROS considers itself a player of that stature, it is a sad day indeed.

Of course, Devdas is not going to be nominated in Best Film and Actress categories. Best Actress this year is already saturated with so many red white and blue American performers that Ash will not stand a chance. Insiders say that Nicole Kidman will win for 'The Hours'.

If Aishwarya and SLB are spending their time getting excited about all this nomination news, they have to get their heads examined. Sanjay should go back to kissing Bharat Uncle's feet, and Ash would have better luck offering herself to Salman for further bashing. What idiots we have in Bollywood.

i dont think Devdas deserves to be nominated let alone win any awards. just wait & watch it wont even make it in the top 5. Devdas has to be one of the most over rated movies of the year. :bangbang:

If devdas could be sent to the oscars then why not Aankhen? after all "Hollywood" thinks the movie is worth to be re made by them. dont you think it would have stood a better chance than devdas?

WOW! I can't believe that some of you people have browbeaten the visual look of Devdas, whereas I felt that the film was visually breath-taking, and certainly one of the most colourful(in a magical way) film perhaps ever made in India thus far. However, this in a whole does not reflect my entire opinion on the film, but I'm giving credit where it definitely deserves.

Agreed...probably why there are so many difference in opinion because some people got to watch in good print and some bad. I got a terrible unsteady print anyway I think that Devdas would have been better using sync instead of ADR.

I also hope that they improve the sub-titles before showing it to any of the academy. It doesn't look good have words such as 'comingness' made up in the translation of the dialogue. Anyway - I don't think that this version of Devdas will do well in the oscars as the best foreign film but it could be in the running for best costumes.

Guys, speaking of subtitles, what you all are talking about is nothing. During the song, 'Chalak Chalak', the subtitles are possibly the worst ever seen on a Hindi screen. It actually goes 'And then it makes a chalak chalak sound' - this is a translation? What person in Hollywood is going to understand or appreciate this sort of crap?

Some other choice translations from Devdas - at least when I saw it in the theater - 'so vain, yes, but moon is scared' (this was the actual line, and though we can understand it as we speak Hindi, its not gonna make sense to a room of firangis). BUT MOON IS SCARED?? Obviously they meant 'But the moon is SCARRED'. Glitches like this are present throughout.
