I wanted to rent a few films, kaante was one coming to mind, so I went to my local video shop, asked if the guy had it in. He said he has an average (pirate) copy on video, but the rent is a bit high, I thought he would ask £2 rental for the night, so I said not to worry I'll pay £2. The shop keeper looked bewildered and said are u joking, the rental price is £10 :bangbang: I turned around and walked out of the shop.

The reason he quoted the high price was because he does not actually have the film Kaante, on VHS or for that matter any other format.

To my knowledge pirate indian films on tape can be bought for £5-£7 and dvd same pirate version for £12-£15. These are then available to be hire nightly vhs £1 per night and dvd £1.50 per night. I have noticed the asian community doesnt really care watching indian films in pirate version and when the original vhs/dvd is available for rental, they dont make much money as people have already seen the movie on pirate version and dont care to watch it again. The only people that would hire the original copy would be people that dont watch pirates at all or missed the film when it was out new, so in conclusion pirate movies make more money than original version, rental wise.
Now the shop keeper must have payed £50-£60 for the pirate version of kaante to be asking ten times as much the normal rental price.
Sad fact is no one really cares people putting on rent or selling indian films, the laws for english films are much stricter and thats why they are hard to get.
Why do people bother with pirate version paying stupid prices for them just to watch the movie a little early?
